What! No trebuchet on the options list?! Dang, I'm never going to get to use this thing I'll chose a longsword or a katana then as those are the only ones I'm trained in.

Single hand sword was my choice.
I think I'd most often go with a single hand arming sword, if I could get or make a shield to go with it. Since a lot of combat of this type in today's environment might include buildings and other enclosed spaces, it seemed to be the best all-around choice, though maybe not the best for any particular situation.
Basically, it's what I know, so it's what I'd be comfortable with.

pole arm, preferably a halberd, naginata, or some other blade spear

Shootermike:
Dang it, now you've raised new issues! (Actually, that's why I put "in context" in my original reply, wondering about exactly when and where our choices would be applicable.)
In today's environment, I'd take a light warhammer with a 39" haft, and try mightily to pass it off as my walking cane.

I'd use a one handed sword and probably a shield... that's what I'm used to fighting with, but I would also consider a hand and a half and a dagger as an alternative.

Yep, that is what I'd pick for sure! Pretty much the same reasons that you gave. Not too glamorous but it would get the job done. And hey it looks like it could even drive nails. ;D

Actually one thats not on there which still had some relevence up to near ren period was the sling, easy to make, I'm quite good with it now out to 30m, rocks are always around or something smooth and dense, you can make your own out of sun hardened clay even, easy to carry just put it in your pocket or pouch with your glandes .......... and it packs a punch, can sometimes strip bark of some tree's and one rock even stuck in a rather soft weed tree the other week .......... hunting and skirmishing all in one ...........

I'll chime in with my usual - dual ripping swords, Katana or dual Ko-Katanas, Grosse Messer, Hanwei Bastard Sword, Tinker GSOW. A bow is nice until you run out of arrows, a spear seems like the user would be have to worry about being swarmed, or like the Picts did to the Romans, where one Pict would allow himself to be run through, then close in to the Roman down the shaft of the spear, forcing the Roman to drop his spear

A naginata/spear for medium-close range can defend against everything except for the bow unless I can make it in close before I get an arrow to the neck. Which is unlikely.

What! No trebuchet on the options list?! It's an Onager you really want. Good against most structures (though not so good as as Treb), but far superior against personnel. Can hit a man-size target 7 times out of 10 at 100 yards. Anyway, I would take a bow. A longbow, specifically, for the best combination of range, accuracy, speed, power and penetration. My backup would be a flanged mace.

I think the idea is no specific situation, we can all do said tool for the job but if we could only have one tool what would it be

I picked the longsword option. Mostly because I'm in a bastard saber/grossesabel/kriegsmesser/odachi kind of mood this week.
Ultimately, though, I'm probably more likely to use a light, single-handed backsword.

Instinctively I would say katana, but you didn't really explain the scenario very well. Are we fighting a modern enemy with or without a weapon? Armored? How many?
Ideally though in any kind of battle situation I would like to somehow have a katana, naginata, and bow at my disposal. But that doesn't really seem practical.

Since zombies have already discussed, let just pretend you are fighting just other guys who have like primative weapons. Sorta like all the internal combustion and exploding weapons no longer function properly.

I chose the bow...I'd like to be able to thin the ranks a bit before melee combat takes place.
