Hey so as you all know darksword armoury is having a FREAKIN kickass sale so I really want to get one, im between the squire and black knight(but thats not the discussion) and Im just wondering how good the DS sharpening service is for the extra 30$ or if Id be better off with buying a belt sander or w/e to sharpen it myself ? and for that matter all around opinions on darksword swords would be sweet I really like them from what Ive heard but Im yet to have one Ive been waiting for a good opportunity and I think this may be it
The sharpening was pretty terrible, it has a very steep secondary bevel which is to steep to cut with. I have ended up re sharpening it. the only advantage that the sharpening brings is that it has taken some of the metal off reducing the amount of work I needed to do. Now that its sharpened it’s a good piece.
Well that depends on how good you are at sharpening.
Me, personally would just sharpen from scratch (although not by hand...never doing a DSA sword by hand again). And 30 bucks almost covers a belt sander...but if your not so sure, that 30 dollar start could save you from messing a sword up
but would you call this loss of labor worth 30$ or would I be better off spending money on sharpening tools ?
That would depend on how experienced you are at sharpening, or how willing you are to sacrifice a sword finding out. When I sharpened my DSA dagger it was my first attempt at sharpening something longer then a knife, and first attempt at producing an apple seed edge. I did it by hand, so the sharpening done by DSA helped me to get started. However having said that sharpening a whole sword by hand is going to be a long job.

I would say get a belt sander and a bunch of belts, yeah it'll cost about $100 when you are all said and done but you'll be able to make your swords really sharp. I would just make sure to get some of the low grit blue belts designed to work on hardnened steel. you're gonna need those to get that edge beveled down.
on that note though Brenno draw files all his swords by hand to establish the bevels. that's gotta be a lot of work.
I don't own a DSA but I can tell you from my experience that sharpening by hand takes SOO much time it's worth the 30$. Even if the angle is steep and stuff it still saves you a LOT of work. I just sharpened a Tinker Hanwei Longsword and it took forever to get that appleseed shape. And it already had a secondary bevel. I can't image how long it would have taken to file the edge from scratch. I don't think a belt sander is necessary to get a nice edge. Swords don't have to be paper cutting sharp. A file and lots of sandpaper does a good job, too.
I think I would likely do the bevel by hand, and Ive never sharpened a sword in my life I just dont wanna pay 30$ for a crappy sharpening job Im gunna see if the sword guy in my town can sharpen swords (yould think a sword guy could, but the guy I know specializes in actual combat stuff so all his swords are blunt and aluminum, he does own an albion and two tinkers though) but I think its really worth while to learn to sharpen myself for now and future reference

I like Eyal quite a bit... but from what I have heard and seen myself, the DSA sharpening job could use a lot of improvement. I have not heard from anyone who was happy with the sharpening they got.
However, like Cold Napalm said... sharpening a DSA sword for your first sword is going to be pure hell, especialy by hand. The stell is very hard and there is a lot of it to remove.
As for an opinion on DSA swords in general...
They are very different then Valiant Armoury's or the Hanwei Tinker line swords that most people are going bonkers for right now. They are much more heavy and they lack and distil taper... so they handle very differently. Being originaly desgin and marketed as steel on steel stage fighting and sparing style swords... they were built to be thick and durrable and tough... and they are that... but they are heavy and more difficult to weild then the aformentioned VA and Tinker swords.
Hairu I would say go with the Black Knight, the blad is the same as the Medieval Knight and if you want see how these sword handle just watch these videos.
I own the Squire and I would say that it is very blade heavy like a type X should be but it may be too heavy for most, I am a fairly big guy, 6'1 and 210lbs so I am just able to man handle it. If all you are looking for is a big chopping single hander then go with the Squire, but if you are going to do more than just chop like some WMA then get the Knight.
@ Will B yeah I was looking over it and when I saw that the squire was a type X I lost a lot of interest. Im a cut and thrust kinda guy. and the Dark knight is like a XIV with more fuller so Im definitely more into that style
my question to you shadow is, despite them being heavy and what not do you still like them ? and would you recommend them ? I especially ask you because I believe your love of the bristol is in proportion to mine and we are men with similar taste in swords
I'll pipe in here for a second, I also own a Valiant Practical Long Sword and even though it is much lighter, sharper and probably almost as tough as the Darksword it doesn't feel it. I don't know if it makes any sense but the Darksword just feels like it could take down oak trees and slay dragons with it's sturdiness. I know I know it's all in my head but the mental state of the individual is almost as important as the tools at his disposal.
PS: The picture in my sig is me at Halloween holding the Squire.

I do still like them... but for very different reasons.
For one thing... like Will B said, the DSA swords convay a sense of stength and power that other swords don't. Like he said, the VA Longsword may be just as tough... but it does not FEEL as tough.
Also, I like some of the designs DSA does... I love the look of my Gothic, and I like the Guardian alot, as well as the Black Knight.
At the price Eyal has on the Black Knight, 145 Shipping included, thats a stright up CRAZY deal. Thats a Windlass Price on a DSA sword... its 60+ bucks cheaper then a VA Arming sword, its a silly deal. I am fairly certain I'll be picking one up myself... I'm really considering it.
The ONLY problem comes in giving it an edge... the sharpening from DSA is not too good, and I really don't want to hand sharpen the thing, so thats the only reason I have not bought one yet.
I got a DSA Gothic as my FIRST sword of true functionality, it was supposed to come sharpened but didnt, I used an accusharp for about 2.5 hours, it would cut milk bottles quite good but soda bottles BAT BAT BAT ........ I worked on my edge alignment and cutting style far more and now I can get through soda's but its a very bad cut sometimes its more shock shattering then passing the blade through. I tried hand sharpening with a stone and oil and after an hour I SWEAR all I did was scuff the surface ....... so hand sharpening DSA's the right way is a real tart
yeah its the only reason im questioning getting one cause the weight i dont mind infact I think its outright sexy I want that feeling of power but I dont know about this sharpening dealio
Well buy the sword now while it's cheap and sharpen it when you have the chance, that's my plan. I'm sure you have other swords to cut with in the mean time, I myself have my Squire and 304S as well as a Hanwei Tinker Norman on it's way as we speak and after the Black Knight I'm buying on Thursday I think I'll be picking up a Bristol.
I'll chime in here. I got the Medieval Knight as my first true cutter. Like they said, it does NOT want to take an edge easily, and the stones just scuff the blade up. I quit and took an Accusharp to it. After several hours of work with it and some 3M Wetordry sandpaper, I was able to give it a nice polish and maintain an edge that will cut soda bottles. Is it the cleanest cut? No. But the sword is all the more special to me because I worked it over the way I wanted it to be. The sharpening service they offer can come in handy if you want to avoid the Accusharp, but with a little work you can make a DSA a serviceable blade.
Plus, that Dark Knight just looks super bad ass, even with the nonblued blade.

Deleted: The cane I have is a 37" hickory with octagon shaft and a 5.25" opening from end of crook to shaft. It is very light, quick, easy to handle and you could work it like Poppy does in the video. Everybody wants to be Poppy.
