Well I was recently out cutting with my VA practical arming sword. I happened to go from tatami, to bottles, and eventually, the branches of a fallen tree. This was obviously not a good idea, and I eventually struck at a 2 inch branch... the sword cut through, but now has a slight set in the blade. Is there any way to fix this, or should I just cope with the results of a stupid mistake?

Just bend it back, sounds like you got a softy or you really botched the cut. These work just as good for western swords as they do for eastern:

Sorry about the set. Sometimes, even the best of us can whack the cutting stand or something perhaps we are not supposed and do this. Just be careful!
Of course, you could do like Mike did once with an Albion Norman and lay it out in the sun for a couple days and see what happens. I am not joking, totally serious here.

That still gives me a laugh when I think about... Mike... the hippie sword whisperer... leaving his blade out to get some sunlight and repair itself.

Hey, if it works- I won't knock it. Sorry to hear about that set...on a VA Practical no less, but honestly, it could happen with any sword. Leave the tree limbs to the axes and hatchets as they were designed for...you keep that sword on softer targets.
I'm thinking of trying meat cutting.

Go buy a whole hog from a butcher. suspend it out in the back yard, head down, and spread a clean new painters plastic drop cloth underneath. cut till your sword is dull, or there is nothing left hanging but hooves. Gather up all the pieces and have a BBQ or make sausage! ;D Be sure to video tape it so we can all watch! BTW: I grew up on a farm where we raised much of our own food. I've seen everything from goats to calves to pigs hung from a tree limb in the back yard and butchered. Dad would never let me go at one with my machetes or bayonets though!

Well I managed to bend it back straight without too much of a problem. Thanks for the pointers everyone! I am wondering though, it is probably much more likely to take a set again, no? I mean now that it has been bent, and bent back into place.

All in needed was a little yellow sunlight to boost its healing factor.

I mean now that it has been bent, and bent back into place. Yes it is. Just deal with it. When you feel the steel starting to fatigue, you'll have to re-heat treat the blade...but for moden users like us, that shouldn't happen in our lifetime unless you haven't learned your lesson and keep hacking at trees and you have to re-bend the sword back every week.

Point taken, lol. I knew it was a terrible idea right before I went for that branch. Yet I still did it... I think I shall refrain from attacking tree limbs for a while

I personally havent attacked tree's with any of my swords just because its a respect for the blade thing. Bottles and pool noodles wont ever hurt a sword cause their flimsy but hone your skills still. If you started shooting apples off a tree with an expensive handgun or rifle you might look/be thought of a bit of a fool for it so I feel using a sword appropriately is the same thing. I dont think you were being a fool about it but tree branches have a very knotty fibre which can lock up a imperfect cut and of course make a good blade take a set. Be thankfull wasnt an Atrim or Albion

Yeah, thank god it didn't cost me $800. I would have probably gone quite mad when I realized what had happened BTW I do understand that hitting a tree limb is considered abuse, and is definately not necessary. I also knew that as I was winding up for that chop, with the countless warnings I had read bouncing around in my head. What can I say, I did something dumb. Lesson learned I guess... At least now I know how to cope with such a thing. On a side note, I really like the sword. The tempering appears to be excellent, and it is very flexible. It has withstood my learning curve, after many flubbed bottle/tatami cuts over the summer. I am shamed to admit that this was not the first branch I cut either... Anyways thanks guys, you were a great help! And that little anecdote about Mike is hilarious.
