Hi, I'm new here, an I am not an expert...
The original post mentioned a price range of $20-30. Have you seen Nutnfancy's video on Youtube about the $20 survival knife (Cold steel 12" bowie machete)? The blade is solid enough to baton through wood and I have seen chopping videos done with similar blades. Knifetests.com's destruction testing video on the kukri model machete shows the blade is pretty darned tough.
Cold steel has a few 1055 carbon knives that can be had for $20. There is the GI tanto, which was also destruction tested by knifetests. I have the True Flight Thrower, which is 1mm thicker than the GI tanto, and I think it would make a good survival blade. The TFT has no guard, so I added a lanyard to avoid slipping onto the blade.
This is probably all old knowledge to you experts, but I have not heard it mentioned so I brought it up.

My first thought seeing this thread brought back was "wow, I thought that one had been settled." My second thought was, and still is, "Man, I could really go for some vegemite on a bit of toast..." Of course, once I'd read the new post, I also started thinking "Ew, Cold Steel... Eh, some people like 'em..." But man, I could really go for some vegemite on some toast...

LOL random, that does sound good. And I still love my CS tanto, but it hasn't let me down yet. Nice final choice there Berethorn, that's a beaut of a blade. Have you been out in the wilderness with it yet? Field tested yet?

I have the same question as the OP so I won't start a new thread, and I will try to help this thread last 'till past 2010 ...
I have to buy a gift for a friend ; a camping/survival knife. I am trying to get the most bang for the 50 bucks I will spend on it. It has to be a fixed blade knife.
So far, this thread helped me narrow down a lot my shopping list, but I came across one knife company I haven't heard of before ; Schrade Knives (http://www.knifecenter.com/knifecenter/schrade/), anyone know them ? Are they good ?

Sebastian,
I think I mentioned Schrade earlier in this thread. They were once good knives, and still have quite a few supporters, but have been going down in quality in recent years. If you can still find a Schrade model with "made in the USA" still stamped on the blade I wouldn't turn it down.
For the $50 price point with a fixed blade I would seriously consider some of the Buck offerings. Kershaw is also recommended and Spyderco has some fixed blades though Spyderco and Cold Steel might be a bit high for the price range.
Now, do you wand a Bowie, a hunter, a skinner, something with a gut hook?

Personal recommendations for $40-55 KA-BAR Stacked Leather Handle Fixed Blade w/6.94" Bowie Blade www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=KA1236Buck Woodsman Sheath Knife 4" Stainless Steel Blade Phenolic Handle www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=BU102Buck Omni Paklite Combo Fixed Blade Hunter with Gut Hook and Caper Knife www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=BU393BKGVPOntario Spec Plus Quartermaster Military Fixed 5 7/8" Blade w/Sheath www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=ONSP17Cold Steel Pendleton Hunters 3-1/2" VG-1 Blade www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=CS36LPSSThere's my list from least expensive to most expensive. With nothing over the $50.95 price of the CS. Looking at the assembled list, I would personally go with the Ka-Bar bowie as that seems to be the best overall bang for the buck, but that's just looking at Knife center. My personal preference is more the "skinner" style knives than bowies but that's just me. I'm not a hunter but I also like my outdoor knives to have a gut-hook as I find them useful for all sorts of little vamp chores like cutting cord. (*note to self: it's camp not vamp - go to SBG before going to deviantart.com*) Note to the Kershaw fans: I didn't exclude Kershaw knives from this list because of brand, I just didn't like the particular models listed at this price point at this particular vendor.

To join in with the other necromancers bringing this thread back from the grave: I too took the advice above and finally made a purchase. Mine is the new Busse SAR-8 SE. i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj58/drkpics/Knives/SAR81.jpgHaving laid hands on a Busse for the first time, I DO see what all the fuss is about. This thing makes my KA-BAR whimper and hide. It feels like I could hang a truck from it. And other Busse models like the Natural Outlaw and Steel Heart are even more rugged. For those not looking to pay Busse prices, though, do note that Swamp Rat and Scrapyard are similarly robust knives with much more reasonable prices. Berethorn, congrats on your purchase as well. I was looking at the RD-7 for a long time. It looks like an outstanding tool.
