I can tell you that Tinker Hanwei blades are really great. I have the Viking and I'm very happy with the blade. Its heat treatment is great, it has a beautiful distal taper and is very hard. Edge is of course bad but I still managed to cut the 2l juice carton jug so that the top part kept standing on the jug after the blade passed through it. It was a cool cut, I'll post a picture. The edge is just not good for plastic bottles, but for flesh and bone (and carton ) still sharp enough.

I don't know if 5160 carbon steel is better than 1060 or not, but I think that if I get the Norman and it isn't sharp enough for bottles, I can always try my hand at sharpening it using a stropping technique. And like Slayer said, I can compare the VA to the Hanwei.

Some random steel charts for the steels mentioned 5160 Carbon 0.56 - 0.64 Chromium 0.7 - 0.9 Manganese 0.75 - 1 Phosphorus 0.035 max Silicon 0.15 - 0.35 Sulphur 0.04 max ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1060 C 0.55-0.65 Mn 0.60-0.90 P 0.04 (max) S 0.05 (max) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Some may enjoy this page as well www.cashenblades.com/info/steel_selection/steel_selection.htmlKeep in mind that it is not the steel alone that makes a good sword. Just an example but if you were to look at 6150 vs 5160, then read the charts, you will see more of what one may perceive as better or worse. There really isn't anything magical about steels and there are more than a few sites one can browse for their own benefit. Cheers Hotspur; why ask why?

The only magic is in the smith who works the steel.

If the army has taught me anything it's that if you want to find fault with something you'll find it.

I feel that the HT on the hanwei is superior to the VA line. It´s not about just better edge retention. But that is pretty much the ONLY thing that the hanwei has one a one up on the VA...but is a pretty big one to be better at.

Just curious, Cold, why do you think the HT is better on the Hanwei?

Ric, the hanwei HT is more resilient then the VA ones. Not by a huge margin, but it´s noticeable. Also it flexes better and it has better edge retention ( once you put a proper edge on it anyways).

Well I really like the VA signatures and practicals but so far I decided to by a Tinker Viking and the Tinker Norman is on order now so just goes to show where I end up spending, so thats my viking swords for a bit maybe a medieval sword is coming next so now I've got my eye on the GSoW ...........
sheer fluke but Hanwei's running with my tastes at the moment and (just my interests personally nothing to do with how UBER-AWESOME VA is doing) my eye is now looking towards doing my own custom wood and leather work with my blades, expanding the hobby as it were and so I've shy'ed a little off VA (although hedemark is still a go for me) because I'm keen to do my own.

The GSOW is really tempting, since the blade is better than the 304S. Maybe eventually Tinker will commision replacement blades for it as well. If he was going to do that, I would more than likely get the GSoW.

Its one of the good selling points for the line. I dunno if I feel comfortable saying the blade on the GSoW is flat out better then the VA304S tho... I have the VA304S and am very happy with it... I don't yet have one of Tinker's Hanwei line to compare it to. If they get the edge right on the GSoW, I WILL, and I'll put forth my opinion then.

Sean, are you going to be ordering a GSOW soon? If you are, I might wait for your comparison and review before ordering myself a sword.

Sean and I may end up getting ours around the same time. I'd love to see how Sean's opinion will differ from mine (or agree). Although it is certainly possible that someone else will buy and review it before either of us.

I'm really just waiting to hear how the edge looks on it... hopefully will know something in a few days.

On the hanwei website its got the GSoW as an allen nut, is it actually gonna be peened like rumours have said or is it allen nut like Hanwei's website says, no offence to them but I take their site with a grain of salt cause they never took down the prototype pic of the tinker viking and used a photo of a production model

I hope that I don't have to wait too long for a review, because I might lose my patience and order one anyways. Brissybeater, I think that on swordnation it is listed as dismountable, which would mean recessed nut, but it could be invalid information, although that is unlikely.
