I forget if it's 30 or 60 minutes but one of the two Well then I will stay on for at least that much longer so I can get you at least, you gave a heckuva lot of solid advice, and I appreciate it.

Jonathan has still not bought anything, he is um'ing and ah'ing still. Oh my word. Someone needs to get through to him that he's not going to make a wrong decision at this point. Every choice he's considering is a very good one, they're just different kinds of good. When I was his age I had a bunch of crap swords, but I was still excited and interested and enjoyed them for what they were. I later got rid of them and got better stuff as I learned more, but I still HAD SWORDS the whole time. Life's too short to wear tight shoes. Get something to enjoy now, if he keeps up like this he'll just be disappointed when he does get something and it's not also everything else he wanted. He's done the research, he's read the books, now get out there and wield the steel!

I feel so much more... exalted for some reason. ;D Yes, our boy Jonathan has come down with a very serious case of Sword Buyers Jitters. He is freaking out about it because he does not want to make the wrong pick... I think pretty soon his head is just going to explode.

I'll bring the popcorn ;D
I think everyone freaks out their first time (swords people, swords!) I know I did. Heck I freak out when I spend any amount of money though, so nothing new there.
The difficulty with pointing that out and believe me we've tried, is that he keeps jumping from sword to sword. Not sure what it is today but yesty it was a freak out over whether to get the GSoW or the VA LS. He should just buy one and find out if he likes it, if he doesn't, sell it and buy another, it is that easy.

If I was him, I'd get the longsword--But I'm me... so I did. It's got a great track record, this place is filled with glowing testimonials, Sonny's got the best customer service around, and as much of a LOTR fan as he is (wasn't his original request something that reminded him of the longswords in the movies and could be used with one hand or two?) the elfin lightness of this one should be right up his alley. Does he really want something bigger, burlier, weighing a full pound more and with no reviews (not to mention costing about $130 more) as his first sword?

I forget if it's 30 or 60 minutes but one of the two +1 to you, sir, for excellent advice and all around first-rate knowledge of edges.

My own personal view, I'd get the VA LS and then get some custom furniture made for it because I don't much like how aesthetically unappealing it is.

I wish I had a camera, because I got mine in Antiqued Brown and it spruces the look up quite a bit--much improved from the plain vanilla model at no extra cost.

Lunaman: can I suggest you pick up the swordsman's companion by Gary Windsor? It is about fighting with a longsword, but the cuts and the footwork all relate to cutting as well.

I'd also recommend Fighting with the German Longsword by Christian Henry Tobler. Even better still, sign up to an WMA Longsword class in your area. After a few lessons you 'click' into what those books are showing you and you can practice your cutting more effectively.

Excellent suggestions both. I'll be heading back to my university in a fortnight, however, and won't have much time for extra classes then. A book, however, is intriguing--I could definitely study up a bit while I'm away from my swords and apply the knowledge over break. I'll look into it.

Actually, as I recall, he did NOT want a sword that was to light and 'fencing like' or something to that effect. I think the GSoW can be had for 259.99 from Sword Nation, so its only a little more expensive then a VA Longsword. I'm quite interested in it myself, tho its a completly different animal then the VA longsword.

Has anyone compared the equivalent Tinker/Hanwei to the VA LS?

That's why he was looking at all those quadfullered performance Atrims and such at first. I haven't been keeping up with all the things he wants in a sword, I guess. 259.99? That's great. I was going off the listed price on the Hanwei website. Damn SwordNation's good. That's where I bought my longsword! Great response time, friendly emails.

Has anyone compared the equivalent Tinker/Hanwei to the VA LS? There have been a few posts about it, but as of yet i haven't seen a full-blown review or even cutting videos. Of course, now that Hanwei has fixed the edges on the swords, I think we'll be seeing more comparisons.

I much like the profile better on the tinker I think, I like a thinner blade profile cut and thrust.

He really liked it which got me to buy the replacement blade and do the grip myself.

I meant a comparison review. Though knowing Mike, his very well may have been. I'll have to go back and check it out. Thanks for the heads up.
