Thanks Ebon Thank you Phillip Glad you approve Sam I did the figure 8 agitation in the quench that you mentioned when I heat treaded this blade. Thanks Kthulu, are you an H.P. Lovecraft fan? If I had room on this blade I would have liked to have etched, " Ph-nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl ftagn." Seems fitting. Thanks enkidu, actually a couple of them came out of the pour with some bad shrink in some small spots and had to be welded over and then re-carved in the bronze. That's what happens when you let yourself get distracted and forget one little step during the process Thanks Seth ;D p.s. Well, you spoiled the surprise about your gift. Guess we'll have to get that toaster instead. Hey Shadow, I feel your pain man Hey Jordan, actually I made three 'cause I'm a selfish bastard and want two for myself ; Thanks leoghen! I know what you mean, I wish I could afford such things too so I wouldn't have to make 'em myself I'll take that as a compliment Brian I just finished the blade and am working on sorting out the etching. Once I get the etching done I'll put up some pictures of the completed blade without the fittings, it's looking pretty sweet if I do say so myself.

I am so envious of your ability to make such an accurate repro of the Atlantean sword! There is not a movie sword in the world I would want more than one of your Atlanteans. I think extending the blade a little is a good choice aswell. Your scuplts are very clean and detailed, you certainly didnt cut any corners. Bravo bro, this really is stunning! Im glad we were able to see a little bit of the process.

LOL @ emo.
"In his house at R'lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming."
H.P. Lovecraft is one of a very small list of authors whose writing can scare me to the point I need a light on when I read him. lol

Agreed with that. He has this doom-ish feel to his writing. You actually FEEL the end coming.

Don't cry sparky, you can always come by and play with mine Thanks Jordan, I'm livin' the dream ;D I've wanted to make these two swords (Atlantean and Fathers) since I first saw the movie in the theater back in 1982, who knew that one day I would! That's it Ebon I agree with you and Seth, I used to read his stories and feel like that stuff could have been based on something real, all dark creepy and ancient. I even went through a period of researching and cross referencing information from his stories in an attempt to discover if there was some real basis for his Necronomicon Anyway, here are some pics of the finished blade... I changed the etching a bit from the movie version. I made the end closest to the cross reflect the design of the mountains that are on the pommel and guard. The other end I just turned into a trident to represent the power of the ocean. I don't think the writing on the movie sword has any meaning so I changed that as well. Here are a pair of close-ups of the etching. Karma to the first person who can tell what it says

"Steel isn't strong, boy. Flesh is stronger. What is steel compared to the hand that wields it?"
That's just beautiful, BB.

That looks like a small tang for a blade that big.

Well in comparison. The tang should suffice. Look at Darksword, puny tangs, but they seem to hold up.

As euros go, the tang looks rather beefy to me.

As euros go, the tang looks rather beefy to me. Gotta agree... it looks bigger then a Brenno Tang, and his tangs are VERY beefy... methinks that sword has more tang then a 1970's kitchen pantry!

Wat Was Lost, Wil Be Found - very cool I couldn't figure some of the figures out, but filled in some gaps. Some of the characters must have had different meanings on your reference The blade is looking great. The shaping is spot on. You do such a good job masking and cutting out your etching - have you tried electrolitic etch with a low amperage 12volt car charger? Just put a small bit of sponge in the negative aligator clip, and attache the positive to the blade. Soak the sponge in salty water. 5 seconds contact will give you as deep an etch as 12 hours of acid, without the worry of your mask lifting etc.. Then you can finish off with the blackage to make it pop. That tang is 19mm I believe. Some of mine big ones are over 25mm But it's still ample.

That's a pretty large tang, in that case. How long will the blade be, and how heavy do you think the sword will weigh once completed?

Hey leoghen, I know it's going to be pretty porky, probably 6 1/2 to 7 pounds all together. I'm wondering now if it will be difficult to get an accurate reading on the COP because of the langets bracing the bottom portion of the blade? Anyway, I'll certainly post some stats when I have it all together Oh Phillip, so close...so close... And then the girl jumps off the cliff. I had a conversation a while ago with Brendan about how it seemed to me that part of the movie was about disproving what Conan's father had told him in the beginning. Conan's father tells him than no man, no woman, no beast can he trust. But this (indicating the Fathers sword) you can trust. But Conan's friends stick with him even when he tries to go on without them, and then they save him from the brink of death. Then the steel of his fathers sword ends up breaking. Thanks RicWilly Hey Jonathan, the tang is 3/4 " wide and 1/4" thick so it's actually pretty big. Also, don't forget that the entire first section of the blade will be braced by the langets running up the sides. He he, more tang than the Apollo missions Thanks kidcasanova ;D You got it Brendan, karma to you! (though you did have a bit of a clue beforehand ) The figures are: quail chick, vulture, loaf; quail chick, vulture, folded cloth; lion, lasso, folded cloth, loaf. Then on the other side: quail chick, flowering reed, lion; foot, forearm; horned viper, lasso, rope coil, water, hand. I stylized them a bit so they wouldn't be exactly like the Egyptian hieroglyphs but still look like they could be related (The story of Atlantis supposedly comes from Egypt, who had trade with them long ago and possible shared or borrowed from Atlantean culture) I've been wanting to try electrolytic etching but figured that would be better on a smaller area. Have you tried it yet? Hey again Jonathan, the blade (starting from the little ears) is about 21 1/2 inches long. Counting the portion of the blade between the langets (where the etching is) it is 28 3/4 inches long. The overall length of the sword is about 40 1/2 inches.
