Buddy, you should make yourself a handle like mine. It'll save stuffing around with tongs and ladders. I have a small carvanners step which I stand on only for the longest sword (50"). For this size I can stay on the ground. No tongs, no ladders. The top tube has some holes and slots (3 choices) for various options. I have a hanger which can attach the blades lower down, or I can project them through the bar for the mega long ones. I should get some better pics. But the thing is I just put a nut or small G clamp on the top and they are locked in. No chance of dropping them. No climbing with the hot blade, hands are well clear of the flames, etc. It works great. I'll get you some more pics. Also worth a note I find they harden very well after 12 seconds in(i.e. past the nose). You went about 30 there, I'd hate for it to be too cool and crack when you straighten it, though it's not likely. I tried a jig with 2 x square section tubes. No good. Cos one side would heat and the other was insulated by the gap it just bananad as soon as I put the blade on. I thought it would be sounder then angle cos it can't twist, I was wrong. Wasted $60. What can I make with 3m of 30x60mm square section tube?...

No worries Paladin, just wanted to make sure we hadn't missed each other somewhere. LPBoyle - world's laziest thief. Hey sparky, Over-sized welding gloves, check. Face shield, check. Rickety old stepladder, check. That little ladder was actually made from the wood of an old church organ by my great, great grandfather. Hi Phillip, Nope, I quit doing shows a couple years ago. Hey Brendan, I actually prefer being on a ladder and having the hot steel in front and below me rather than above me. A set of real tongs would be nice though. I don't want anything attached to the blade that would keep me from being able to put the lid on the quench if I needed to. Though I guess the likelihood of getting a flame-up on a quench tank that big is pretty much nil. I did the last fairly thin blade for about 12 seconds and still had flame when I pulled it out. I was reading that it should only be smoking, not burning. So I figured I'd just watch and wait for the oil to stop sizzling rather than go by an arbitrary number that might not be right for this particular blade. The blade is pretty thick and wide and was dead straight after the third normalization. You can see in the vid that I checked it again after the quench, so the final clamping in the jig was really just a formality. Sure would suck to have it crack after all that work though. I suspect that your high alloy steel probably hardens faster than my plain 1075. Hm, you could make a nice sturdy welding table with the square tube as legs. Hey Seth, here ya go...

Hi all, had some family stuff going on for the last couple of weeks so I haven't had a chance to get on-line. The bronze parts are cast; I'll get some pics up tomorrow
