Here's the deal. You're going into single combat to the death, on a flat open plain, against an opponent of equal size and skill. You're both outfitted in a loincloth (with optional matching top for our female combatants) and nothing else. You can choose between a Spartan Lakonian or a Scottish Claymore. Both blades are sharpened to a hair popping edge and your adversary gets the sword you don't choose. What say you?

Given the two, I'll take a lakonian. Versatility will be key in this fight and a Claymore isn't quite as manageable as a lakonian.
Of course, getting inside of the fellow's range will be tough, but I figure if he's only as good as I am, I might stand a chance...

I went with the Laknoian because my first choice is not an option. If I could chose my weapon, it would be a Katana.

If all we've got are a sword and a loincloth, I'll take the Scottish Claymore, and start cuttin' off whatever parts of his body he lets get close enough.

It's the blade I'm the most familiar with and it would be a bit faster than the Claymore. Besides, it would satisfy my curiosity with regard to the East vs West sword fight Vernon

Well, I think skill would be a much greater advantage than reach, but if you've taken skill out of the equation by stipulating equal skill, then reach becomes a greater issue, especially on an open flat plain. If there were a variety of terrain (cover, some outdoor some indoor) the shorter weapon would be on more equal footing.

I'll take the reach advantage, although I would be looking around for quarterstaff sized branches to eliminate the speed advantage of the Lakonian.

Bah, you sissies and your oversized swords. Must be awful having to compensate for your own inadequacies.

I'm going with the Lakonian. I think I could dance around me long enough to wear me out, then I'd dart in and stab me in the throat.

I had to go with the Lakonian because If they miss on the firsts swing then they are all mine. I should be able to dodge the first swing, after all I WAS the dodge ball champion of Carrol Highlands Elem.

All things being equal, on open flat ground, I take the Claymore every time without question.

I'll take the Lakonian. Closing distance is not that hard for me, and the Claymore would just slow me down too much.

Though I train in two-handed, I'd prefer a gladius/qama size weapon if limited to swords. However, I'd also like to point out that I would gladly take a single-handed war hammer or axe over a sword any day...
...That is, if the G19 I typically carry CCW came up missing for some reason another. ;D

Against myself? Claymore. Reach is everything against me.

Against myself? Claymore. Reach is everything against me. I instantly thought of about 4-5 good jokes for that... but because your sick, I'll give you a pass. THIS time. ;D
