Sword porn incoming: Here is the Sheriff I picked up in the classifieds. I chose a Sheriff because the guard matches the guard on my Mercenary and I thought it would make a nice companion weapon. I made the scabbard yesterday for it using the 'quick method' I use when I want something fast to cover a blade - which consists of a triple-laminate, power-sanded to shape core. I used 2oz leather over the poplar. The risers are latigo under, and I embossed my last initial - "S" - below the mount risers. It could be a little thinner width-wise, but I am really happy with the way it turned out over all. I've FINALLY perfected my seam method which makes for a nice uniform and even seam on the back. ;D Here is my Mercenary and Sheriff together. I dyed the Mercenary grip dark brown (from light brown) to make it match the Sheriff:

Wow, Sarge! You do nice work. And that's the "quick method'? I'd love to see when you take your time.

Thanks!
I came up with a quick method because I was consistantly making really, really nice scabbards that took two weeks to make - then not keeping the sword. Or I had a cheap sword I wanted a woord-core scabbard for and did not want to invest alot of time/money in it. Or I'd get a sword and want to carry it to a period event and not have anything to carry it in.
It is really easy to make a nice wood core scabbard fast:
I use (3) 1/4"x48"x4" pieces of poplar from Home Depot. I trace the blade of the sword onto the first piece, just it out with a jigsaw. I then sandwich the cut out between the two other pieces, glue it together with quick-dry epoxy, cut it to rough shape with a jigsaw, then powersander it to a good form. Superglue on your risers, get a piece of hide smear glue all over it, wrap the scabbard, trim your seam even with a razor blade, let it dry. If you have an old chape, you can pop it on the bottom. The whole process start to finish take between 6-8 hours - perfect for an evening project before a faire or Con. People ask me how I do nice scabbards so fast, well this is the process.
This process, including the glue and leather will run you about $20 per scabbard. Though not 100% accurate, you will have a scabbard you built yourself that you can beat to death and never break. One day, when I remember to have my camera charged, I will do a detailed tutorial and anyone can do this. ;D
As far as the blades go, I am happy with the purchase and the performance. Both are excellent swords, and the Sheriff is the best Type XIV I have ever owned.

So, when're you gonna start taking commissions on these scabbards? Nicely done by the way, I love the Sherriff, nice little beefy blade there.
Edited to add: looking fwd to that tutorial as well. +1 for sharing.

Gorgeous set of swords. And a very ingenuitive solution to scabbard making. As I was reading it I was thinking "DUH! Why didn't I think of that?" Simply brilliant. And it looks great too. Congratz on both those bee-uuu-teee-ful acquisitions.

And I get in trouble for making phallic comments I always appreciate witty phallic comments. Those who don't, seem to be a bit too... "prickly."

Yeah, there are those who think I "cock" up rather often but that is generally because they are on the "receiving" end.
