Wow... I'm going to allow this to stay up for now... but will be reviewing it, and possibly deleting it.
Now Hiroshi didn't do anything wrong, and he is right, that is something to never, ever do... but I'm not sure I want a video that unsafe posted...
Just going to review this for now , but I'm going to keep a close eye on it and may come back and shut it down.
Y'all play nice.

I assume you're referring to holding tatami while somebody cuts it in which case, I agree. Very, very bad idea. Luckily it went well here. Unless you're referring to endorsing Haz's wares? Or perhaps inferring something negative about forum member crazycolerogers? (is he still here, or was he one of the folks that deleted their account...I can't remember. )

Obviously when I said unsafe , I was referring to cutting tatami out of someone's hand.
Cole is a member , and deserving of 100% respectful treatment, and I certainly wouldn't censor Haz's products, whatever my opinion might be, which in fact I have no opinion of, because I've never held one myself.

Worry not, Marc, your post snuck in before mine. I wasn't referring to you; merely posting a slight jab at Hiroshi.

I'm going to lock this for now, and will come back and either reopen it, or delete it.
OK, I'm temporarily reopening this for now.. in hopes we can have a civilized discourse about the safety issues...
I want to make it clear that the cutting practices in this video are grosssly irresponsible and unsafe, and neither I nor SBG condone , endorse or support such acts.
When cutting please keep all spectators out the range of the blade , or in any direction the blade may fly if it slips out of someone's hands...etc.
Game on..... for now.
We'll see how it goes.

I take it you've met the fellow in the video, then, Ken?

I welcome this discussion and to add to it I would like to relate an incident that I witnesses a while back and coincidentally just mentioned in another unrelated tread. About ten years ago I saw a fellow teaching some sort of martial arts giving a demonstration in a public park to a group I was with. His class was composed of young teenagers. At one point he placed a watermelon on the abdomen of a student laying on his back and cut it in half with a katana. Keep in mind I know next to nothing about any kind of martial arts, that being so I will hold my opinion here. However I'd like to know what you that have training in such think of these type of displays.

I've never like those displays but they sure do wow the typical audience.
I am reminded once again of another incident which has been discussed here recently; the video where one fellow chops at a cucumber resting on another man's throat. Quite a bit of blood in that one.

I don't see what there is to debate here. the video shows some terribly unsafe cutting. I also think that any instructor that cuts a watermelon off a student's belly should be locked up for reckless endangerment.

We should probably avoid making unfounded assumptions about other's people's training and qualifications.. It's just...a bad idea.
Things like this are just risky. That's the word for it. The people involved obviously have confidence in themselves and eachother. Sure, they can do it, but it could take the tiniest mistake for someone to become seriously injured or worse.
I won't bash the people involved, but I just can't believe they'ed take the risk. Putting themselves so close the deadly mistake on purpose... It's not like pulling punches...The consequences of that aren't so deadly...

Personally I think such things are deplorable.
IMO it goes against the humility and sprituality I was taught went hand in hand with training. I believe one so endowed with Martial Skills has obtained them through spiritual pursuit and should assign a dignity to his actions...
That way of thinking is becoming outdated, with promotion being now a big part of what various ryu do... demos and what not... but I still don't fully subscribe....
The watermelon cutting on the stomach thing... while cheap, and crass... is usually a parlor trick, done with a rebated blade and a pulled strike... the watermelon splits pretty cleanly...
Still, not something that should br done.

Ooh! Sweet. Thanks.
Unfortunately I happen to know an instructor who does the watermelon thing...And since my Sensei died, he's the highest ranked person in our style, to my knowledge...-facepalm-

The way I see it, crying horror at videos like this is on the same level as claiming the circus to be bad for your health. Fancy stunts are practiced (typically) and executed by skilled persons, and I have just enough faith in the guy cutting that I'd be okay with holding the tatami, too, if a proper stand was not present. I don't even know the guy, but it's pretty hard to miss something like that...hell, I could do it. Hold still... Of course, I fully understand the concern that anybody seeing this might think "wow, cool, I want to do that!" and grab some poor friend and proceed to remove their arms...but going back to the circus analogy, who here hasn't tried walking on a tight rope or juggling...anything? Ever tried the whole fire breathing thing? I haven't, but know people who have been successful. In short, I have no problem with this video, since, as has been said already, the parties involved clearly know what they're getting into and are executing the act with as much care as they can. Though...I'm really not sure why they didn't just put the tatami on a stand...maybe they figured the non-fixed base of a person's grip would be more challenging...cole?

yeah, ok I didn't know that's what they tend to do with the watermelon trick. I still think it's something better left undone. I won't fault a guy doing what he needs to promote his school to keep the money rolling so the school can survive. still that's a pretty different thing than what we have here.

I believe the video shows, clearly, unsafe cutting practices and poor judgment by all those involved. I agree with both Tom and Marc... in that we at SBG (and those of us also in UBC) do not, must not, condone that sort of behavour... and that it is an unfortunate display that to me reflects poorly on those involved.

Hey, please don't take what I'm saying as insulting your instructor. Different people have different ways...
Very few people believe like I do...
My own son does demos with his Kempo dojo all the time...it is just not my way....
I sure don't mean to insult anyones style or Sensei.

Quite frankly this whole video disgusts me. From the shameless promotion to the unsafe practices. And (not to sound mean here).....Cole, you should know better!!
