I too don't like the slur of the word "Japanese". And back to other topics, what Katana would someone suggest for trying to hack a side of pork up? I'd go with a TH katana. Maybe a Cheness or maybe the new Hanwei raptor line, I've heard they're pretty tough and are excellent cutters. Just try to avoid using a brittle edge if you're cutting bone. Unless of course, you've got plenty of experience...

I *just* (showed up yesterday, while reading up on sharpening actually) got a new all high carbon steel katana from badgerblades, on recommendation from a friend who owns a few and makes chainmaile. He's told me stories of using their bastard longswords on a suburu, so Ill happily try out the katana on a fridge/car/toaster next time one becomes available. Ill be sure to get some pictures.

Going back to the deer....(ignoring the back and forth)...I've had no trouble in cutting through the spine with my gen2. Though cutting may not be the right term. Oftentimes, it's more of a cut halfway through the bone then shattering the rest. No doubt, it's a test of a blade's stregnth, as it transmits quite a bit of shock back through the wrist, though different from anything else you'll feel from cutting.
The bones in the neck are, of course, a bit more delicate, and as I stated before, the windlass chopped right through them.
I don't know if I would recommend it for practice, though. The feeling is, for lack of a better word, somewhat creepy, when you pause to think about it, and sometimes you can't help but think about it when you're sparring with wasters, particuarly after a hit.
Anyhow, we'll see how things go next year.

"Japanese" is no good here. I don't like it, it's a racial slur where I come from.
Back on topic...traffic cones. Has anyone tried cutting traffic cones? You know... the ones made out of rubber.

Ever even thought about traffic alittle expensive to buy to cut up. Guess I could go down the road cutting them up. There's alot of road work going on around here.
Also a nylon jacket would be easier to cut than a leather jacket.

jesus god its an online forum relax no one has to be politically correct here and im sure their are maybe only 2 if any japanese people on this website. were pretty much all North and South Americans here. no matter how much anime you watch or mangas you read or chinese made katanas you buy you will never be a Japanese. Before this turns into a bigger deal than it needs to be, PLEASE REFRAIN from using such slang terms in the future. Whether they are meant as a harmless abbreviation or not, they are not appropriate here. There happen to be quite a few people here that frequent this board who are of Japanese decent. So i will thank you very much to not use 'Japanese' when describing Japanese subjects. Or any other slang term for any other nationality you may wish to use. Its a simple matter of respect, and is only 5 more letters to boot... Not too hard. BTW: This is not open for debate, so consider this the first - as well as - the last word on the subject. ...Thank you for your cooperation...

Off topicish-ness Ftw. anyone tried cutting a Coconut? I've seen it done on a video once on TV using a cutlass (not a movie but a show about swords) but I haven't seen it since and that was years ago.

One forumnite did some test cuts on coconuts ... Not really cuts since it was done with a mace and a warhammer. Seemed like good fun. Another target that I used a few times in the past are soft drink/beer cans, filled with water. They are easy and fun to cut, because of their rigidity they are easy to cut and they make a nice ''ting'' sound when struck. However, be warned that these aluminium cans aren't good for swords ; they will easily damage your edge by creating tiny (or larger) chips and scratches (its unavoidable, even if aluminium is soft, the impact will leave marks on your blade). All my blades that have cut these cans had scratches after getting the cuts done. Also, once chopped in two, these cans have very sharp edges, so be careful with that too, if you use them. I use them sometimes, for the reasons above, but not very often, for the other reasons above. I'd call it softcore sword abuse , at your own risks, be safe and mind the damage it could do to your weapon.

Many years ago I tried some unusual cuts, the first one was not even a cut, but here goes: 1. I was in a dump, and got an idea to try something to test my swing speed. I set up a large whiskey bottle on a post, and swung at the neck of the bottle with a miraculously unbroken 8 foot fluorescent tube. Success, the top of the whiskey bottle was gone, the bottom still sat on the post, the fluorescent tube only broke off a foot or so 2. I used my Gim sword to cut an empty beer can in half, the can was sat on a post and was not attached in any way 3. The not so successful cut; one day my mom wanted to cook a shoulder of bighorn sheep that was frozen solid. Knowing I liked cutting things, she asked me to cut it in half for her. I happily took it outside and set it up I used the best sword I had then, the WWII Japanese Officer's Katana. I wound up and swung for the hills The sword hit the frozen meat exactly where I wanted it to, but it felt like I hit a concrete block The frozen meat flew about 10 feet away, and my hands were buzzing from the shock. To the credit of the sword, there was no damage to it, and the frozen meat was only chipped about an inch into the meat and bone Needless to say, I learned that a sword is not much good for chopping a piece of frozen meat and bone

On a certain notion and I'm not pointing at specifics except maybe more knowledge is a welcoming thing: I'm 1/2 Vietnamese - In the years have I heard many, many times people of different backgrounds (white blacks asians hisp etc) speaking along Viet this or Viet that...Japanese this ..Thai this and that ..never, ever did I see a single asian who got offended - from Maine to California to Florida. I will glady tell any asians, especially a Viet who gets offended over that to kiss my ***.
