Who knows, Maybe meat cutting should be in the curriculum for all swordsmanship -Reisz or at least a very graphic video showing it....

I think maybe a Demonstration from the Sensei/Instructor at the training location would probably be more effective than a video, I know I didn't take away any more respect than i already hold watching that Cold Steel DVD, that way any practitioners who desire to opt out could still get tactile feedback, really observe what the cut has done. I don't doubt the value of such a practice, but I do wonder what the reactions of people with different approaches to swordsmanship would be? either way this is getting kind of off topic, I know bottles were mentioned in the OP, but those big Arrowhead casks that are about the size of 4 milk bottles side by side (2.5 Gallon and up) are great targets for Horizontal cuts, you can even hang one side over the edge of your stand and try full vertical cuts too, you can get them bigger but it's like one of these: www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10315236you can put them on their end too for some pretty deep diagonal cuts, (you know.. for a bottle) ;D -Rhys

Zucchini, pickles, potatoes, any oblong food item. They are not hard targets as far as difficulty getting through them, but it's a lot of fun trying to cut them neatly in two while laying horizontally. Harder than you think. Again, keep your blade clean, especially with the pickles. Sheesh, Lorena Bobbett much?

Most fun for me? Well, being a WMAer I try to incorporate some learning into my fun, if possible. Often, I'll have someone throw water balloons and cut as they come in, practicing my evading at the same time. If I have a good day, I can avoid getting wet. If I have a bad day, or if more than one friend decides they'd like to start throwing water balloons, I would often be drier if I went and dunked in the pool... As for sheer fun? Having an uncle that owns a deer processing plant is my best bet...he'll often have 2-3 deer around that no one wants at the end of the month, or have gone black, or any other bad things that happen to deer when someone doesn't pay promptly to have them cut up properly. He lets me take them off of his hand to feed to 'snappy' (Pet alligator, long story.)...and snappy isin't too picky if they're minced first. This does give me a bit of a shock, though. Honestly....I never thought swords were as powerful cutters as they were. My g2 sword of the third crusade can bisect a deer in one cut, if my form's right, and a MRL falchion can easily behead them. Rather disturbing.

I have a bunch of cardboard cores from where I used to work. These are the cores left over from rolls of paper. Kind of like the cores left from paper towels, but much larger and thicker. Anyone ever cut anything like this? Some of them are very thick and should be a real challenge, while some aren't much thicker than the paper towel cores and should be pretty easy. If I can figure out a good way to cut them maybe I can post a movie. Any sggestions? I was thinking of suspending them by a wire or string or something. Not sure if that would work well. I know a regular cutting stand won't work too well but I may try the thicker ones that way. The thick ones are about 18 inches long and the rest are about 3 feet.

I may, if I can get a working camera within the next six months. Right now I'm saving up for my customization workshop, so everything else is put on hold. Possibly next year, when deer season rolls around again. I'll have to put a disclaimer, though. Wouldn't want the squeamish to stumble across it.

Just make sure you use a really tough blade, some of those bones can be a nasty surprise when you cut through soft meat and hit a hard bone. Spines are the worst (if you hit them wrong), then leg bones, ball joints, and finally ribs.

I think a video of the deer-cutting would be great, very educational (and just plain cool).
Also, alchemyuser1, "Japanese" is considered by many people to be an ethnic slur, so it would be best to avoid using it as to not offend people, thanks.

i say Japanese short for japanese "eruialsul" so dont correct me on my grammar and for the record zipperhead would be a racial slur. anyway why not cut something basic first for if you do have to come in a situation where you have to use a katana on a person (hopefully not) im pretty sure they would be wearing clothes so try out an old jacket or something. (im not sure but it would seem to me a katana would have a hard time cutting through a bomber jacket) . and better yet put clothes on the dead deer your thinking about hacking up for a real simulation.

"Japanese" is a racial slur no matter how you use it, for someone who uses "youst" though i understand the lack of knowledge..
On a happier note, has anyone tried cutting stainless steel? like... high carbon steel VS. Stainless steel? would be interesting to see if it could cut it xD

But if it was tempered most likely break it, as tempered stainless steel is very brittle. You'd have to use a sword you care very little about aswell, as the edge will most likely chip.

A katana would have no touble cutting through a leather bomber's jacket. Also I agree please don't use Japanese.

I too don't like the slur of the word "Japanese".
And back to other topics, what Katana would someone suggest for trying to hack a side of pork up?
