A question about cutting/sharpening.

... and a thankyou to the humble rake!
(Note wooden peg, complete with battle-damage! )
As you might notice from the above pic, I did a wee bit of newspaper (and bottle) cutting this weekend with the following swords.
(Atrim, Cheness, eBaytana.)
Something that I found was that my two katana cut far better on thin and thick rolls (and also on bottles). They are also far sharper and will cut paper reliably while the Atrim will not. I was told by the seller that this model is approximately 4 years old.
Now, this may be an artefact of my inexperience with european swords but I don't think I'm that terrible! (I may put up vids for critique in the future when I have the time...)
I find that I have limited success with cutting newspaper with the Atrim... sometimes it'll cut nicely if the target is really soft while other times it'll make a decent gash then bounce off. The katana nearly always cut very nicely but sometimes on a particularly thick roll they'll get stuck.
As an aside... this makes me wonder if there isn't some design behind the 'bouncing off' aspect... I certainly wouldn't want my sword to get stuck in my opponent during battle. Also... I'm not trying to put down Atrims here... if there was a sword I'd take into battle this would be it... it's very fast and has excellent control, thrusting is also a dream and while it might not lop rolls in twain I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end!
So... my question is... what do people think about the following courses of action:
1) Sharpen the Atrim until it will slice paper reliably.
2) Your edge alignment sucks. Keep practicing, noob!
3) Other (please specify).
Thanks!
P.S. I take my hat off to Ianflaer for the tip on using tape to hold newspaper together... it works great and is far easier than using twine!
