here are some vids of Hiroshi and I cutting bamboo tatami and bottles with our various swords after the match. we did a lot more cutting than is shown in these videos but the cameras were dying, getting full and eating batteries so we let them stay off after a while.

I don't think he has an account here but he has read the fight thread. I was happy to have him cut with a western sword. it really tickled me to see "Mr. Samurai" enjoy cutting with an arming sword. I cut a little with his Hanwei Bushido. really nice sword but it gave me hell. I had a really hard time cutting with it. I would have said it needed sharpening but I don't really know if that's the case. it may be its more traditional geometry or something. it's a beautiful sword, I just couldn't get it to work for me well.

What sword was Hiroshi using while cutting the bottles? That day must have been super fun!

The first sword Hiroshi used in that video was the Valian Armory ATrim Practical Longsword (Tuned version). it is a very nice sword and has been said to be 80% as good as a full Angus Trim longsword.

That's right Bill, Hiroshi seemed to really like my single handed ATrim1429. he also cut with my Valiant Armory practical Atrim Longsword but did not like it as much.

I understand why Hiroshi doesn't like the longsword much, I too find a transitional difficulty back to the longsword after doing extended periods of training with katana and vice versa. Mechanically, longsword and katana handle very differently and the techniques feel very different, this is especially true of kendo to.

and here I figured the longsword would be more suited to him since it was sharp and two handed. I most likely sabatoged his enjoyment of the sword by telling him to basically use it like a katana. oh dear, once again I show my ignorance. . . I need to get some books and study the longsword techniques so I can better understand the weapon. I've never done much training with it. I used to fight bastard sword in the SCA before but it was never one of my prefered forms. he did well in spite of my poor advice.

Hiroshi shows very impressive precision, especially with that milk jug in the second video.

Hiroshi shows some very nice control with his swords. He's a good example of Kendo.

the technique Hiroshi is using with the arming sword is a perfect example of what I was showing him. he was able to recreate it right away with almost no effort he has a deep understanding of sword-work and it was a pleasure to watch him cut. in most ways he has better technique than I do, certainly with katana. I plan to learn as much as I can from him about katana.

Ya know... I've actually never cut mats... I really want to at some point... but they cost so much damn money, I've never done it. I dunno why I just chose to share this info now...

I'm actually somewhat disappointed by the performance of the Bushido in that video... I suppose I could blame Hiroshi's technique but judging by his other cuts with other swords...he seems pretty okay at it. I really like the Bushido, too...

on this bushido: I thought it was dull and needed sharpening but I didn't want to push that since I didn't know how it came from hanwei. it is 6 years old and has never been sharpened or even touched up and Hiroshi admitted that it might be a little dull. either way I'm not sharpening it not that sword. too expensive for my hands.

Tom: has hiroshi ever been trained to do tameshigiri properly or is he just applying principles of wielding a shinai and what he thinks is supposed to work?
