I have started to make my own scabbards and I really enjoy it. I decided to make a web page that might help someone start their own scabbard project. My web page doesn't show every step, but my hope is that it will at least show the basic steps required to make a leather, wood cored, scabbard. Please keep in mind that I am not an expert, and I still have a lot to learn, but maybe I can help someone get over the hump so to speak. I will be more than happy to answer any questions. At the top of the page is a button labeled "Projects" and I have several other projects that I have documented on my web page. Most (if not all) of my projects are medieval based. I plan on adding more projects in the future if there is an interest in this area. www.yeoldegaffers.com/project_scabbard.aspgaffer

Nice work and a helpful resource. I am thinking of attacking a scabbard project to replace one I have that is just leather with no wood core. Thanks.

Gosh guys, thanks so much! You are really making me feel welcome! I am glad my how-to may assist someone else create their own scabbard.
I remember how much I procrastinated before I started my first scabbard.. but once I started it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be... like they say.. "Just do it".
I also appreciate the karmas.. I didn't even know what they were, but read about them on the FAQ :>)

Compliments here too gaffer. Your scabbards look lovely. Nice leather work. I'm very familiar with wood, but the stitching of the leather and all that puts me off.

Gaffer, have you ever made a scabbard from something other than wood?
I'm getting a new beater katana in a few days and plan to make a scabbard for it, but prefer durability over appearance. (something to protect it from damage while camping, etc).
Ive been thiking of trying something like pvc piping, cut longways to get two thinner peices I could epoxy together, heat and bend them to fit the curvature of the blade.
Any ideas would be very welcome
Thanks

I would think a very strong scabbard could be made using wood as the core and then wrapping the wood with fiberglass. Not really sure if the fiberglass would be Necessary. The fiberglass stuff you can get at an automotive supply.. but it is messy :>) You would want to make the wood core thicker then normal, and to be honest.. it would be pretty damn strong. Since your scabbard would need to have a curve in it you would just need to get a piece of wood that is wider to allow for the curve. See below. -gaffer

Wow, what an excellent and informative site you have there gaffer- thanks for posting this. Granted, it'll be quite some time before I decide to go ahead and try this but it is an option to consider...pay $700 for someone else to do it or do it yourself? Of course, the level of detail that the pros can bring is immense...but it is good to see that it can be done if you have the will to do so...+1 to you, my good man.

Thank you very much, I'm certainly going to have to make at least a scabbard and shield using your site as a guide, very useful, and I like that you've got plenty of pictures too. +1.
