Hello everyone. I was wondering if anyone had ever given a review of any of Shinwa's or United Black's line of swords? I have noticed them in catalogs i get, and claim to be making a name for themselves. I was just wondering if anyone had any information or experience with either of these companies and their products. Michael

Shinwa is absolute junk, from what I've heard.
'United Black' is a line from United Cutlery, which makes cheap wallhangers. There has been some speculation, as of late, that they MAY be starting to produce some semi-functional katanas, but there's been know confirmation as to whether or not the new ones are even decent, let alone worth the asking price.
I'd say, steer clear of 'em and go with some Musashi's...
I hope this helps!

Slayer, since nobody has owned any of these swords to see if they are any good or not, you need to shut up. Everybody that I know who has owned a Shinwa has been happy with them.

You've always such a way with words, Master.
I've examined several Shinwa up close on many occasions. They're somewhere between Masahiro and Cheness. In other words, not so great. For what I've seen them sell for, I'd call them crap without hesitation.
You say people are happy? Well, ignorance IS bliss...

thank you, Zan. ;D ;D ;D I have a tendency to refuse to lose when I know I'm right, lol. It's gotten me in a LOT of trouble with my parents, though... I used to be that way even when I was wrong, but I think that I've finally conquered that li'l quirk. -Slayer

There's such thing as a sore loser and a sore winner. In my book, the latter are the biggest losers of all.
Just some food for thought back atcha....

I think what gets people telling you to shut up is that you say things with such conviction but don't follow that up with where you got the information from. Which leaves many people wandering if you are just pulling opinions out of thin air or are you basing this knowledge on concrete information. In this case you have done your homework and have info to back up your statement. You might have avoided masters reaction if you had just said "ive read several articles on here that said that they are a load of crap, here are the links"

Very bad form... Master is responsible for his own reaction... a simple "have you any provenance of that " ? beats the hell out of "you need to shut up "

Now that all is at calm, oh well Shinwa swords are distributed by budK, a large knife, blade and misc. online catalog. Most of the non knives that budK sells (namely sword reproductions, medieval and ancient weapons) are Stainless Steel wallhangers and/or non functional weapon replicas. They offer a functional blade line which is Shinwa, but then, issues with its functionality seem to be the order of the day. Very recently, United Cutlery introduced (or reintroduced) the United Black brand, which focuses on producing and selling carbon steel swords, in contrast of their traditional usage of stainless steel to make sword replicas. BudK also offers both United Cutlery and United Black items. As for reviews, eventually someone will end up buying one and will review it here, since most of them are sub $300. The main thing should be, is it worth taking a risk and spending hard earned $300 or whatever amount on a blade that has so many issues (Shinwa) or taking a gamble at a brand new line (U. Black), when there are many established sword manufacturers that cater our target zone, and are already well reviewed? Just my two cents on this.......

Bottom line, more tact and thorougness on the part of both parties is in order.

Bottom line, more tact and thorougness on the part of both parties is in order. Aye... Although I do have to grudgingly admit, young Slayer here has become QUITE the ferret for info. While his hands on knowledge is still lacking... his ability to dig threw the iNtErWeBs and find things has become VERY impressive. Also... he has now more then once commited quite a bit of his own time finding links and info for SBG members that have asked questions. I know I was one of the people that took a bit or a 'parental' tone with Slayer... and sometimes I still do. He is FULL of unchecked youthfull zeal and sometimes he charges forward without thinking... but I to must admit he has grown a LOT in how he presents himself since he first apeared. That said... Slayer... Slav is right... the only thing worse then a sore losser is a sore winner. Although there was really nothing to be 'won' here, and Master's comment was harsh and uncalled for... you will find, in the long run, that humility and grace will serve you more then 'I told you so's'

Quite a wise statement, Shadow. (or should I start calling you 'My master'? ;D) And thanks for the compliments, as well as the constructive criticism. I've learned a great deal while I've been here, just as much in social skills as in swords, lol.
+1 for the insight, to both you and Slav. (when I recharge, lol!)
