I thought I would post a source for the body armor that I am using based on the excavations at Wisby. I made some modification to my armor like making it slightly longer and spacing the plates out more (since I am being hit with 1.25 inch wide rattan). The key to this design is that it closes in the back. As the three pieces come together in the back, the two lateral pieces overlap the one vertical piece. The lateral pieces connect by buckle. The vertical piece connects by means to tree rings tied together. This allows a certain sliding action as the arms move forward independently. The leather is a light 4 to 6 oz. Its purpose is only to hold the plates in place. www.armourarchive.org/patterns/wisby_cop/

The steel inside the leather?
Too bad they don't seem to have anything on Chinese armours...

Too bad they don't seem to have anything on Chinese armours... 'eh? Well, it Is primarily Western gear. Unless I'm missing a whole section of both the forum and the patterns somehow... In any case, I got to see a Wisby-based coat of plates today. It did its wearer well and has lasted a long time (I think the current owner is the 3rd of this particular suit). It doesn't weight much. It's simple to put on. Leaves some big hole right around the shoulders and armpits, though...

Leaves some big hole right around the shoulders and armpits, though... Yep sure does, but they wore the Coat of Plates over mail. Before this, the option was mail only. The purpose of the Coat of Plates is to offer some protection against a lance from a horse-charge, which will be aiming of the big torso target. Historically the layers of protection would have been gambeson>mail>coat of plates>shield. When I fight, I wear the coat of plates over my gamebson. Wearing the mail too would be overkill since I don't have to oppose horse-charges. The other option is to just wear the gambeson and mail. The coat of plates are a lot cheaper then mail and easier to make.
