I've always been curious how many minor injuries come from that kinda mass melee ...... can you SCA guys enlighten me to besides good armour do the guys have rules on how much they can put in a swing etc ....... just curious to the checks n balances of the re-enactment scene ??
Should join a aussie group one day (that i have time and money)

They are definitely pulling their punches. We strike harder than they do, but they're using steel... I'll bet those are dull, too...
That's still AWESOME!

thanks for the karma's Ab & Lady Deb......glad you enjoyed it. There are a pant load of video's from Russian medieval groups on Y-T...some where they are fighting in a forest and other open field battles....just a multitude of mele mayhem.... some may be pulling blows but if you watch over & over, you can pick out people getting the dog mess knocked out of them....head butts, punches, kicks and a few of the guys with the pole axe's are flailing away. who needs cable or satallite tv when there is Youtube... cheers

Thanks for the heads up! I'm snaggin' these for a dial-up friend. There's quite a few - and SCA too. Never thought to search for this stuff on YT.
I'm glad to see YT is used for more than home videos of dogs eating toothpaste. ;D

Should join a aussie group one day (that i have time and money) Just so you are clear, these guys are not SCA. The melee fighting looks similar however, because melees are more about coordinated troop movement then the individual skill of the combatants. If individual combatants have skill it add to the effectiveness of the unit of course. Brissybeater, you should try this out if you get a chance. Check the safety record of any group you join. Like Taran said, they are definitely pulling their punches in this video. I have watched that video many times. I think its great what they do. I would love to play with them. I believe they have banned the thrust due to high injury rates in this group. I am thinking they must have official power restrictions too... especially on those Axes and Polearms that can easily break bones through mail. I saw a few guys wailing away, but that might be a case of over enthusiasm or they may be trying to beat away a weapon that is not clearly seen. I got a chance to fight two guys visiting from Russia. I wish I had my video cam with me.

check out this one, I found it following related links from the other.
I like the mix of fighting types. their sword and sheild fights are wild, hitting with the shield and all. wow!

I believe they have banned the thrust due to high injury rates in this group. That would make sense. But it would really screw me since my main attack is a thrust...
