Well I just received my first order of Tatami mats, and I have a question about rolling techniques. Out of the box they are rolled/folded across the width. Now i know they need to be soaked before use, I attempted to roll one dry across the length but encountered some resistance so I stopped. Will they roll across the length once the are soaked? The videos I have seen seem to be taller than mine if I roll them across the width. Plus I would like to have more target area. Sorry if this has been covered before, but like the title says I am just a stupid noob Mike

If you look closely at the mat you can see the straws that are stacked side by side. roll it so the straws lay on top of each other, don't bend the straws. this would be rolling it so the width of the flat mat becomes the hight or length of the roll. also the same direction you would roll a poster. DO THIS DRY. roll it as tight as you can get it then use postal packing tape (the fat clear stuff) to tie it together. I find tape works better than string or twine, but I guess that's personal preference. after you have it rolled and taped soak the entire mat in water for 12 hours. let it drip for 15 minutes after you pull it out and then cut. also: www.tameshigiri.com/folding.html

Rubber bands work well as ties (No. 61).
