The other thing that I would do when approaching any smith for a custom piece is buy one of their existing pieces to prove that I am a) not all talk and that b) I can actually afford it. Only then would I ask about custom (although a different approach occurred with my good mate Brendan but that was a different situation).
Slayer: He makes lightweight swords as his website says, I doubt anyone has been insane enough to do damage testing on a powning blade, that would be like taking a Yoshindo Yoshihara and hacking at a tree with it.

Slayer: there is no need to be like that, the questions you asked were fine they just weren't really asked in the correct way. This forum is here so that we learn about more than just swords, there is a wealth of information here on many topics and if we disregard or delete our posts then we may rob someone else of this self same information. Ok, you made a mistake, learn from it and allow others to learn from it.

Better you learn this way than do something REALLY bad.
Just remember not to be afraid to ask us. You may get a little ribbing here and there, but it's better than to end up with the wrong product or severely injured.

Good point, severely injured is what I'd be if I tried that at his forge! (ARGH! I just read a book about the Chinese Triads and now every time I go to type 'tried' I type 'Triad' instead! AHHHH!)

I thought so as well, but I emailed and his wife (the Customer Service department) replied saying that he didn't accept commissions and anything available would be listed on his site. So THAT was my informant...and she'd know, wouldn't she? Every now and then I actually know what I'm talking about, lol. Thanks, Slayer EDIT: Spell Check Slayer I stand corrected karma to you for contacting them. When you post something claiming to have knowledge about a subject it would help if you can qualify that knowledge by saying where you get the information from. I suspect that like many sword smiths he will produce a commission peace, but only if it is something that he is interested in, he has the time and he believes that you are a genuine customer and able and willing to pay. If you went to him and asked him to produce a katana or some fantasy blade, and started asking him questions about how much abuse the blade can take, I suspect he would turn you down, simply because they are not the kind of swords he wants to produce. I could see a high quality swordsmith like him being in high demand and only accepting very specific commissions.

JP is the king! I have a couple of my pieces in the same room as a couple of JP's pieces. In the hands of a fairly serious collector. I must say I am so proud that an owner of JPs work is happy with my work too!
Slayer is a crack up if you don't take him too seriously. You'd love to read the first email he send me ;D ;D ;D
Regarding Jake's art - He was an apprentice of Don Fogg, so you better believe that his welding and forging would be top notch, as is his heat treatment with multiple tempers etc.
He no longer accepts any commissions, period. He is SO good that he makes what his heart desires, and you better believe there are buyers out there happy to snatch up his latest pieces in a heart beat, at any price. There is a butt load of money out there you know.
How do they say it? "If you have to ask, you can't afford it."

Thanks Bren...I think.... lol. Hey, I'm a combination of a genius and an idiot; what more can you ask? ;D I got another response from Sara, Jake's wife, responding to my apologetic email, and she said that neither she nor Jake took it that way and that I reminded her of one of their best customers, lol. (I wish that I COULD be one of their best customers, lol) Oh, and Bren, I mentioned Fableblades to them in conversation and she said she took a look and was quite impressed. Now how's THAT for an ego boost, mate?! THE Jake Powning and his wife were impressed by your work! (Not that I'm surprised, but you're a modest guy so I don't think you would have thought about it.) If I made another blunder and it was a terrible thing for me to mention you, I apologize; as with my luck recently it probably was, lol! So sorry in advance if it was undisirable, Bren! -Slayer

I just wonder how you have time for anything in life what with all the e-mails you send out and whatnot. Perhaps you are a cyborg who requires neither sleep nor food?

It might be worth mentioning in this thread, that if you're looking for some custom work there are some very skilled artists right here in this forum. Brian of DBK does some awesome leatherwork for scabbards and handles; and my buddy Thedann of Katwood carves wooden cases and handles that rival anything out there. ;D If you haven't done so already, check the galleries and do a search for some of the nice stuff posted here from various folks... it's well worth the look! Sometimes you don't have to look past your own backyard - just be sure you have funds available before making any serious inquiries!

Quality over quantity mate Sometimes it's a smart idea to contemplate the potential reactions to what you are about to write to someone instead of just blurting it out as fast as you can type or speak it as fast as it comes into your head. Not meaning to be cruel here, but follow that rule and I can almost guarantee you that you will suffer far fewer embarrassing foot in mouth situations. In the end its all up to you on what you say.

Hammersword ,thanks for the plug my friend ,the check is in the mail. Just kidding about the check but not about the thanks. The world would be a better place if more people were like you. And in case nobody knows it yet Hammer is a first rate musician , computer teck (he built mine) and the only artist I have ever met that can freehand celtic knotwork. Like you said ,there's alot of talent on this forum . Brendan's swords just knock me out, and Brians leather work is superb, gods if he made a saddle and bridal I'd sell my car tomarrow and ride everywhere just to show off the quality.

I've met a couple of homeschooled kids... Oh boy.
I mean no disrespect whatsoever, because all three of them are exceptionally bright and have received a top notch education from their respective families, but in two of these three there are marked signs of a lack of social, er grace? Their etiquette is fine, it's just the way they act, react and interact with others, it's a little stilted, perhaps?
I'm only basing upon the kids I know, and I mean no disrespect, just an observation. I'd totally homeschool my future kids, but I wouldn't want to deprive them of the social education that traditional schools offer that you just can't get anywhere else.

I figured out some time ago what the reason for school really was. I didn't really learn much there that I could not have learned on my own... except the people skills that are imposible to develop without, well, interacting with people.
