Hey guys,
I have been thinking about something lately and thought I might ask some input. I have not owned many swords but the ones I have owned have been sub $300, I have also used numerous blades from numerous creators as well. So my question is this, I'm not really interested in filling my house up with swords (does that make me a heretic?) so I wonder if it is better to save up and go with one or two custom blades or to go with what I can afford now? There are so many fantastic sword makers around (although we did just lose one of my favourites). If I were to go custom I would look at Jim Hrisoulas and or John Lundemo.

Well, would you rather buy 500 stink lizards, or one parrot?

Well, for every new sword you get you could sell/dispose of an old one. It's the only way I can cycle through new stuff here without family freakin' out. You buy one, you dump one. I dunno, actually I'm hiding the old ones... But the thought of a custom one is great. I'd go with that: it could very well turn into a family heirloom...like the fruitcake my family has stored in the closet (I'm kidding).

Nice futurama reference It's just something I've been mulling over, especially considering that my interest in blades is running more to blades that aren't really available as production, such as Khopesh and yatagan and things.

I've been collecting swords for years and over time have come to realize that Quality does far outweigh quantity. Very few times have I received a stock production sword and said to myself, " There wasn't anything better I could have put this money towards."
Higher quality, custom/customized weapons always end up staying around for years ( barring a break in years ago, lost 9 swords.)
That's not to say that lower priced swords haven't held any personal value to me, just that it's infrequent in relation to how many swords have passed through my hands.

I've only got a couple more peices I want to fill holes in my small collection... and from then on I'm going higher end and custom. I think buying/selling varrious sub 300 production swords has given me a sense of whats out there, what some of the differences are... but most importantly, it has helped me to figure out whats important to me in a sword, what I REALLY want out of one. What I've learnd is... there are a lot of great production swords out there... and different ones have different strengths and weaknesses. For me tho... I'm going to pick up just a few more peices for the 'wholeness' of my colection... and from then on I'll do two things. 1. Buy/sell swords so that I can experince new peices and review them to help out others. 2. Go higher end and custom for the peices I'm going to collect for MYSELF. I would rather, in the fututre, pick up one really decent sword that I can find very little fault with then three swords that I like fine, but that don't really fufill my wants. I have ideas I want to work with both Fables Blades and BKS on... and I have a few higher end pickups I'm interested (Like Gus Trim swords) and I don't mind saving for those in the future. However I love getting a new sword and handling it... so I think I'll take a page from Marc's book and pick up swords here and there... play with em a bit, review em... then sell em for someone eles to enjoy. In the end tho, do what you think is going to bring you the most satisfaction. Thats all that really matters. ;D

I would go with the custom sword. A bunch of stink lizards (Kudos to HR) would only take up space. It would not be too helpful.

I'm for the custom/higher all the way . Well at the very least get one and see if the improvements are worth the money for you at the very least. And going custom and having one blade that you want exactly how you want is never a bad thing in any collection .

Saving for the custom sword is ok. I stopped buying Windlass and Hanwei to save for better pieces like Del Tins. I don't have either money or patience for a custom that is let's say $2000+ and takes a year+ waiting, but that is not necessary. You can have beautiful and very good swords with customizing simple but very good swords like Del Tins. That is a nice middle path for me, not a bunch of Windlasses and not one or two extra expensive swords but medium number of good medium range swords customized to my taste. And even real customs from less known smiths can be very pleasant surprise and they take maybe one or a couple of months to be done and will be maybe 200 or 300 euros. Take a look at Katzbalger recommendations thread. I posted a link with a custom claymore order from Magyar swordsmith Viktor Berbekucz that will cost 350 euros with shipping... And the claymore looks great. I have a custom order viking sword from Viktor and I will post pictures when it will be done. I don't know what the exact price will be yet.

I've already bought the only sub $300 sword I really want. My next will be custom, either from Paul Chen or Garret. My next will be custom from the one of those 2 that I don't get my first custom from...

Hey Bloodwraith, The more I've learned about swords, the less I think sub $300 swords are worth the money. When you get up to the $600 range you start to see some really well made pieces. I can certainly sympathize with everyone that doesn't have the money to spend on an expensive sword (much of the reason that I got into making my own), but if you're even considering the option of saving for something higher end or custom rather than a bunch of lower end swords then absolutely go for it.

My plan...is to do both! There are dozens of sub $300's I want, and then I want a bunch of Fableblades too. So, I'm going to try and buy both ranges, as there is absolutely NO way I'm ever going to take a Brenno-Blade to a stump or tree, but DSA's are replaceable, in the rare event that they DO actually get damaged, lol. See my logic?

See my logic? I would do some heavy cutting with a Fable blade... Mainly because I trust it's strength and would like to get a feel for it when it is under a little stress. I would not want a sword that could be easily broken.

Of course! I doubt Brenno's stuff would break even after slamming into 2x the stuff a DSA could take. The thing is, that it is too precious to put in danger when there is no need. If I had all the DSA's in the world and 1 fableblade, and I went to a medieval war, I'd take the Brenno; no contest. (no offense, Eyal, you know how much I love DSA . After all, they ARE 3 times the price of your DSA's!)
