BB, I like my KC Celtic a lot. It's a real nice little cutter, comes paper cutting sharp. One thing, it's a DH blade. I bent mine a bit out of true on a bad cut. Staightened out easy enough and is still a good cutter. Tough enough to do this even after the set.
It did bend a little from the abuse, maybe a quarter inch out of true. I just straightened it again. Still a good sword, imo.
Sean, on the subject of the Rittersteel Celtic, I saw this video of a fellow cutting with what I believe to be one.
Makes me rethink my opinion.

Well, he did say he sharpened it with Tom's method... but still, it might not be a bad sword, but it is going to be a bit heavy.

I've never handled a RS sword but I have some of their catalogs...all of their pieces have a 'heavy' look to them and not all that tantalizing as far as looks go...to me.

I have two RS swords, Paladin, and you're correct in your assessment going by these. The first was the full tang katana or "Competition Katana" as it was called. I bought it early on when I was in my "full tang's are best" phase. It has a utilitarian look that appeals to me but the grip is a bit large and didn't come with a very good edge. I have since been able to get it to cut and it is a sturdy bastard to be fair. The gladius I got for cheap off ebay and really is too heavy and not very attractive. Still it's a gladius.
I may pick up the celtic at some point for grins if I can get a really good deal.

Thanks for that Ric, I didn't want to buy because I never liked the look of any of their pieces, not even the 'authentic' series - those all just look charred to me.

I think you are forgetting that the Celts were not dandy little fencing men in tights. They were strong warriors who favored simple yet aggressive fighting styles. If you read about their encounters with the Romans, I think that you will find that they would have rather hacked through their opponents armor, rather than stabbing a weak spot. So anyways, I don't think that a "crowbar" like sword, as you call it, would have been uncommon for Celts.

Jonathan: when it comes to weapons, weight and balance are everything. Even hacking through opponents armour requires a well balanced sword and for stabbing it is even more important in terms of putting your point exactly where you want it to go. Everything is relative but in this case a blade that heavy, unbalanced, unwieldy and "dead" in the hand would have been uncommon. The thing about warriors is that they grow attached to their weapons and as one of my friends says "if it doesn't handle well, it ain't worth s**t" from what I know from martial arts and re-enactment overly heavy swords "crowbars" are not good no matter how strong or skilled you are.

"...they would raise their swords aloft and smite after the manner of wild boars, throwing the whole weight of their bodies into the blow like hewers of wood or men digging with mattocks, and again they would deliver crosswise blows aimed at no target, as if they intended to cut to pieces the entire bodies of their adversaries, protective armor and all..." -Recorded by the Greek Historian Dionsuis who was present when the Celts sacked and looted Rome You may be right, but this record makes me think otherwise.

I would never think of you as a dandy, Ric. I think that a man like you would be right at home with the Celts. I found the quote on one of Paul's reviews, lol. www.sword-buyers-guide.com/celtic-swords.htmlI don't know where he got it from.

Do not believe Greeks and Romans when they talk about Celts. They didn't like them and wanted to present them in a bad light to others. Some Greeks were allied to some Celts (Greeks from Sicily, Spartans...) and you won't here something like the quote you wrote from them.

True enough, Luka. Everything stated by a human must be considered from their perspective.

Man, I really need to keep better track of my old threads. I started this back when I first joined SBG under my original username (same account different display name) hence the DD (dragondaddy) reference in one of Ric's earlier post in the thread. My wife has since moved on in her desires and while she still loves the kris/flamberge style of blade what's now on the wishlist are now simply her scimitars (one sharp, one dull), that #4 kris, and a Fableblade if Brenno can ever come up with a good She-Ra sword. Other than that the family swords-to-acquire list would go like this: * Raven Studios Wooden Dance Scimitar (Mommy's) * Hanwei/Iberia Scimitar from wiwingti (Mommy's) * Raven Studios #103 CMC Wooden Jian (Daddy's) * Raven Studios Wooden Niu Wei Dao (Daddy's) * Jin-Shi Custom Niu Wei Dao (Daddy's) * Jin-Shi Custom Jian (Daddy's) * Hanwei Scimitar from bellydanceprops.com (Mommy's) (this is the sharpened version) * some form of foam sword set for sparring (Little One's) * #4 kris from traditionalfillipinoweapons.com (Mommy's) * VA Practical Longsword (Mommy & Daddy shared) * VA Practical Arming Sword (Mommy & Daddy shared) * Scorpion Bows Khopesh (Mommy & Daddy shared) * Set, Sword and three athame daggers from Fable Blades (whole family, if we win the lottery)
That's the complete list of what is wanted by this family. I'm giving myself between 1 and 5 years to try and achieve all this so we will see what happens.

Oh well. Maybe the guy lied, and maybe he didn't. I still think that celtic warriors were pretty cool guys.

I think "lied" is too strong an assumption. What people say is usually filtered through their own experiences and opinions.
Yeah, Celts were cool but Romans were cooler.

I don't know about that... but it is just my opinion after all. Ric, since you are the head hancho here at the ancient swords section, can you tell me which gladius is your favorite that you own? What about your favorite celtic sword?

I'm no head honcho here or anywhere else. I just got a few gladii. My favorite is the Kris Cutlery gladius, very beautiful and tough to boot. The complete package imo. For a cheaper option I was out playing with my Windlass Gladiator today and it is a good blade for the price. A basic utilitarian mainz type.
The only "Celtic" type I have is the KC model. I haven't handled any others but I think it's the best in the price range. I'm thinking I'll get that Ritter Steel Celtic at some point if I can get a good price. Heavy or no, I like the look of it.

Yeah, RIGHT Ric... you have "a few gladii" like I have a FEW extra pounds in my gut. What, you got somewhere between 12-16 Gladii now right? Can't wait to get my hands on that KC Gladus, see what you have been raving about. Would LOVE to have one of those KC Celtic swords someday too. I also love the look of the Ritter Steel Celtic, and may pick one up at some point... tho like you, I worry it will be a clunky, poor sword.
