I woke up bright and early 'bout 9am and knew I had to do just one thing. . . cut with my new PK light. I'm really liking this sword and had enjoyed cutting with it the night before so I figured bring it in as it whent out. anyway here I am in my house robe and pajama pants cutting for the new year.

As always, great cuts. Awesome way to wake up to the new year great blade. I'd suspect the XL would chip or roll easier then the standard pk light but with that kind of ability from the sword and user, I don't see the need for the xl geomatry.

Trevor, Just because you cannot see something, does not mean that your vision is true. Geometry of varying types is at the users discretion. The right tool for the right job, and all that.
I imagine it would be like a golf cart with the various irons.
You are right that it could chip, especially with bad form. But those swords (XL) were really meant for experienced swordsfolk. Hence the competition tag. The Japaneses seem to be using this type of geometry of late in their Nihonto so as to stay ahead of the game.

thanks raven, you're a brave man saying that to a guy with a sword! lol (in a defensive voice) it's not pink, it's red! Master, yeah it feels like summer or mid spring, it was almost 50 degrees that morning and by afternoon it hit mid 60's I'm very impressed with this PK Light. when I hit the stand it didn't feel like I hit it with a DH katana it felt like I hit it with a very springy TH western sword. I don't know what Hanwei did to get it so springy but it feels great. I also chopped through a bottle cap and associated bottle neck the night before without chipping the blade. I was worried about this since I've seen pictures of hanwei practicals chipped by bottle necks. not sure if I got lucky, did something right, or if they've fixed the swords, but I'm happy about it. when I think about it though, Hanwei had to do some fantastic heat treatment on this blade because it is so very thin. if they hadn't it would have been flimsy. another interesting thing is that harmonically this sword is superb, it's center of percussion (vibrational dead spot) is 6 to 8 inches long and covers almost the entire monouchi. to test a katana's COP I tap the blade on top of my cutting post 4x4 and watch the bounce. in the dead spot is doesn't bounce at all just stops dead on the drop. this same test works on westerns though usually I just smack them on the side like everyone else.

Those are some great cuts tom. I think I'm going to start cutting dries only.
EDIT
Which model is that, it's the PK XL light? Can you link me to where you got it.

It's "lightish red" eh, Tom?
You know they already have a name for that colour...
...It's called Pink.
I'm a little slow this morning so it took me a minute to figure out how you got a daytime vid at 2330 in South Carolina. How's the weather down there?

Now just exactly which PK is this? Is this it? Or is it the $170 PK with 27.25" blade as shown here at SOM? You say it is a "light", but I see no bohi. I like the robe. The samuri have/had their hakima. We modern practitioners of the sword arts need to make our own fashion statement. If we could add an SBG logo, we could sell it as official cutting attire. We could offer it in a light weight poplin or poly-plush for colder climes. ... Just a thought.

I was just imagining the very thin geomatry that came in contact with hard targets like the 2x4 stand or metals, haven't seen an XL blade in destructive tests. Just trying to imagine the XLs being put through the same situations the traditional geomatry has been through in history, would they perform better or worse with contact with armor, other swords, etc... Anyways, was watching again and I agree with Tom that these swords aren't given enough credit.

Frankly I don't think it's that difficult to not botch a cut. I mean, if you get too excited and don't focus then sure but any right minded individual can keep a consistent no miss record. I've only hit my cutting stand on purpose so far, which is why I need to make a new one
