i've always thought the Cheness Oni-Yuri was AWESOME looking and the videos i saw with it were shocking, but at the same time i've heard some things about cheness QC issues like, bent blades and loose fittings , and it leads me to wonder , would ordering an Oni-Yuri (or any other cheness sword) from the SBG store reduce the chance of getting a 'dud'
I always think of Cheness and 9260 spring steel when i think of shockingly awesome swords. but then i remember some of the duds i've read about and i feel like i should stray away from them ... so i ask you all .
Are Cheness swords not as good as they seem ? or are the few bad things i've been told weighing too heavily on my mind ?
(also, anyone know if the oni-yuri is differently hardened ? ...hmm wait ... if it was it would say something on the site..sry dumb question...why dont i just backspace this..oh well =P humor yay )

The oni-yuri is a fine blade. I don't think that Cheness' QC is any worse than any other manufacturer out there under $300. If you want a DH blade though, go with a Hanwei Practical Light.

If you want a DH blade though, go with a Hanwei Practical Light. i'm still leaning towards Hanwei but i have always wanted an Oni-Yuri , and seeing as i would love a DH blade i think i will get a Hanwei in the end, thank you Sam. i did need to ask about Cheness tho so i could but the QC thoughts out of my mind so thanks for helping with that too

I like Cheness for sub$300 swords. the oniyuri is a bit of a strange beast, some love it some hate it. some people have trouble with the tsuka being so long. honestly, if you don't do Bujinkan ninjutsu the oniyuri is just a kokatana with an anoyingly long handle.

Well cheness fit and finish has always been on the not so good side (the musashi DH 1045 line I got has MUCH better fit and finish then any of the cheness swords I have seem for instance). Their QC seems to have gotten a bit worse to boot. Their tips are also not hardened. However they are good swords for dojo cutting when on a budget. Getting from a good dealer will definately reduce chances of getting a dud.

now hold on a sec Cold, have we ever proved their tips are unhardened? I'm not saying you're wrong I just remember a lot of talk about it but no actual proof. I can agree it looks likely but I don't think that's enough to say it so definitively. so where's the proof? did I miss it?
