Review by Danny Ball of Dayton, Ohio
Well, here it is, the $88.11 Black Bamboo from trueswords.com, it took only 48hrs to get from Georgia to Ohio via FedEx. Forgive my camera, it's old. This katana supposedly sports a real hamon as claimed by trueswords.com, unless they are misinformed... it's not the prettiest hamon but it's there, I don't see any fatal flaws...so if you guys see something, speak up. The boshi is present...
I have to admit, this sword is not bad for the price, the blade is straight and polished pretty well and all the fittings are nice and tight, the same' is real also. Here's some pics of the tsuka and fittings...
There is no Musashi logo on the habaki, only on the seppa with some kanji on the opposite side. Looks much better imo. The tsuba on this katana isn't half bad either, it's well detailed and made from iron.
This katana weighs in at only 2.1 lbs, it feels very fast in the hands.
The ito is done nice and tight also. I give it a 5/5, for what it is. The only thing I'm worried about is that the blade is thinner than my other katana.
I'm very pleased with todays cutting, no damage to the blade after I accidentally hit the crate, not even a scratch.
Here's some pics:
Ouch, I thought my blade was done for.
Here some pics of the tang and fittings, yes, the tsuka was a pain to remove...the habaki however was a perfect fit. Here's a surprise...no cracks in the tsuka core!
I'm not sure about the how historically accurate this piece is, the fittings are cast, so that certaily takes away points.
Historical Accuracy: 3/5
Fittings are nice and tight, with no gaps or play. The black powder coating(or whatever it is they blow/spray on there) rubs off easily. I took some fine grit sandpapaer and polished up the fittings, it does look much better this way. A point off for finish.
In conclusion it really is a nice functional DH katana for under 100.00, I highly recommend the Bamboo Warrior for beginners and novices alike.
Fit and Finish: 4/5 -1 for the fuchi/kashira
Handles like a Ferrari, feels great.
Handling: 5/5
No cracks, wobbles, weird noises....except for that great tachi-kaze sound!
Structural Integrity: 4/5
For under 100.00 I'd pity the fool for not buying it, 3 words: AUTHENTIC CLAYED HAMON!
Value for Money: 5/5
Thanks for reading my first katana review.
