(Slanderous), but someone I was talking to at an arming sword cutting tournament not too long ago actually said they’d feel a lot more confident getting up there if they could bring their buckler. Genuinely: emotional support buckler.

Well, the thing is, nobody knows how the vikings used their swords, so yes, there's a 100% chance we don't know how to use them for sure!

Last one made me think... I have never seen migration era swords in competition. Of course, I haven't seen many competitions, but still... I think it's fairly obvious why. Fingers are cool.
