Growing up I had many, many Victorinox, but I really dislike the steel they use for the knife, dulls very quickly compared to anything else. When I was 7/8 on holiday in sweden my stepfather bought me a Mora kid knife, one with a dull tip (found out recently they are still in production). It was the first knife I really liked, 10cm/3,9" blade, took it everywhere I could for a time, until school started again. I also carried scalpell folding knives a wile, but the sharness is also a downside, they dull instantly, also most scalpel blades are crap stainless and don't handle use well either way. BTW I did not expect how relatively dull scalpel blades are out of the box, they don't even shave. I expected them to come much sharper (they have a fearsome reputation for cutting, but that's solely based on the really shallow edge angle, like 9°). I also have scissor multitools on me, but I don't like the small scissors. The lowest one is the only one where I like the scissors, but everything else is crap.
I have a big multitool as well, but never carry it, too bulky. I use it at home for many things, it has anything you could want, but it's too heavy any big, could carry 4 pocket knives for the same weight. But if I carry a multitool, I want usable scissors.
To be honest, I don't carry any of the knives as self defense tool. For this I have pepper spray but thank goodness seldomly have felt the need to carry.

Yeah, I don't carry for self-defense purposes either. I just like big knives that don't get lost in my pocket. And I use them all them time so they really are handy and I feel lost when I'm without it after so many years.

Well, out of the 15 people that voted so far, 10 voted for 4" or larger, so safe to say members here tend towards pocket swords, though to be fair, I should have added a last category "I don't carry knives. Sharp objects frighten me."

I have a question at this point, do knives/daggers/swords look bigger in videos to you as well? Have seen a buscraft video recently, where he said the knife was big, and it looked to be 15cm/6". It was 11cm/4,3", I was really surprised at that revalation (BTW, I would not call that a big knife....)
The original Dundee knife had/has a 25-30cm/10-12" blade according to google, I would also have guessed it was much bigger than that, 35cm/15" at least

A buddy I used to work with started carrying the Cold Steel Spartan 6" version as his "work knife" but I feel like that one's a bit much. My 4" Luzon is a good size for most everything, but the 3" Biwa is more convenient to use.
All of my knives are tools. I only carry a variety because each one has a different work class. For instance, the JJ Martinez is my personal steak knife. I used its predecessor heavily as a grooming tool, even shaved with it for a while, but can't get that kind of edge on this one. I use the Luzon for anything that might cause damage, leave residue, or yield undue wear and tear to a nicer knife, and the Fact used to be my air bubble popper when I got them in boxes at work. My "fixed blade" is just there in case I need something longer, for whatever reason.

I switch out my EDC just to keep things from getting boring. A lot of times I forget what I have by Tuesday so when I need it, it’s like Bilbo “What have I got in my pocket?” The only thing that influences my choice beyond whim is if I know I’ll be around possible knife shy people or out in public, in which case I’ll carry something smaller and stylish, usually one of the kwaiken style blades or Brous sniper.

I switch out my EDC just to keep things from getting boring. I've changed my kit numerous times over the years, but I like what I have right now. Most of what I bought in recent years was an attempt to replace my original JJ Martinez, without buying the same knife again, because I'm weird like that. I finally decided, six or seven knives later, that what I really wanted was another JJ Martinez. For a while, when I was at work, I only carried old-fashioned, two-hand-opening knives around the 3.5" mark, because for a while that was the maximum legal length in my state, so as to be less intimidating to the knife-shy. Then I decided I needed something with one-handed operation and the length limit went away so now I carry the aforementioned lot. Sometimes I'll throw in Cold Steel's Range Boss or Kiridashi, the latter of which I actually forgot I had until just now and I may start carrying it as my box cutter at my current job...

I still have my Kershaw Leek which is similar in feel to a kiridashi. It's assisted too, so easy to open, but so small...I'm not sure I'll ever carry it again. I have a whole roll of knives I'll probably never use I should probably consider selling.

Tricky to open one-handed, basically requires two hands to close.

Sharp objects frighten me." Yeah, when you have a larger collection, specific choice for context can come into play. General population will rock the 3"-3 1/2" blade for ease of carry, legality, large selection, etc...and I carry these often. However, for instance, when going to a sketchy area and having the choice I will and have carried just under 4" to 5 1/2" bladed knives. Hell, that Cold Steel Espada with the 7 1/2" blade and long handle with wave action opening is a freaking game changing short sword when pulled out of cargo shorts. Can block a baseball bat and chop off a mans hand. MONSTER!

Ah hollywood...and to think I thought that was funny when I was a kid, letting a group "get the drop" on you. I just showed it to 2 of my daughters who have not seen the movie...my eldest (16) said "that just ruined my day" She also found it "annoying" (esp. the Tarzan bit) and wanted to "erase it from my memory". I am chuckling more from that than movie scene, thank you.

Munroe Sigil and Kier Feist Yowza! That Sigil is nice! What's the blade size.. 3.5" or 3.75"? Probably worth more than my entire collection!

And here I am thinking I'll never carry a Microtech because of the price (which is around 700€ for the Combat Troodon), much too afraid to loose or damage it. (I know they have a warranty, but no idea if that's available here) The Sigil is also a knife that probably won't go well with skittish people, the "Sharp objects frighten me" sort.
I wonder now, are there any EDC knives you absolutely never would carry?
For me it's Opinel folders. I know many who love these knives, but I just never liked them. I could see myself using a Spyderco, though I dislike the hole, the knives themselves are good. I also see the value in the Victorinox swiss army knives. It's really just the Opinel I dislike so much, I have never carried one.
