Hey, i was enjoying a nice day of humid weather and nothing to do but sit around and drink tea when i was given a neat little gift, not sure where my friend got it exactly but its a sword (w00t swords...)
anyway it seems really REALLY old, and its not that long, its quite short =/ not sure if its as long as a wakazashi but it seems longer than a tanto, the person who had it before me must not have taken great care of it cuz the tip is chipped but by no means is it a wall hanger =/ (one peg) no-hi nice and solid too. cant get the tsuka off but i can tell its full tang =/ small bit of rust on the blade too and also the tsuba is really heavy almost feels like its made of steel =/ anyway to the point ah and the tsuba is round and mostly solid with a small hole carved into it, not too fancy
i have polished it , washed it up really well and now i want to know what i should do, i been thinking of restoring it (cuz the wrapping is quite worn and such) and adding it to the collection or another choice put it up and leave it alone =/ really sorry i cannot get any pics up at the moment i'll try to some time.
-edit- oh and unlike most swords i see, the habaki is a dull grey color as is the tsuba =/ odd much

I agree - a picture is worth a 1000 words.

If that is a Nihonto, do not do anything before you get a quote or advice on what it is.
Please, post pictures and do not touch it again.
Thanks, -Tajima

sry i could not get more pics, cam died as i was about to take more, and as you can tell from the pics im horrible with a camera. well thats it , i highly doubt its anything that good. but im more than sure its not a stainless steel wallhanger (and honestly i kinda hope its not anything that good cuz i doubt i'll be able to take proper care of it, better than its previous owner did tho thats for sure , poor sword )

It doesn't look old it looks like an SLO but it's hard to tell with those pictures.

I'm not sure you could take worse pictures without trying very hard...but I agree with Bishop... looks like a SLO... more pictures of crucial areas like the kissaki would be useful though

when you take your next pictures, back up the camera some and get pictures of whole areas. the whole tsuka from kashira to tsuba, the whole fuchi to habaki area, the kissaki, the blade. relax as you hold the camera and if you can remember, gently hold your breath as you gently squeeze the button. you should squeeze the button on your camera like you squeeze the trigger of a gun. in other words squeeze it so slowly it surprises you when it goes off. it also helps to hold your elbows in against your sides. really need better pix before we know anything. good luck, and even if it is an SLO you got it for a good price.

It also helps to brace your arm against something solid so your hand doesn't shake...

Not sure about SLO. The cross overs on the ito seem to alternate, not usually seen on low end katana. There does appear to be proper same, full wrap or not. Cheep katana almost always come with brass habaki and this seems more like tarnished silver. Desperately need better, and more, pictures.

Yeah, I'm 99% sure it is an SLO. Indicators: -Habaki -Poor geometry towards the base of the blade (ie, the Habaki). This could be an indicator that it is a well made sword, but most likely unintentionally ruined as such. -Looks like nylon ito. Lots. -Massively out-of-proportion fittings (Fuchi in relation to Habaki, etc.)
But a picture of the Kissaki will reveal all.
Thanks, -Tajima
