Dear all, I am new to this forum and also to Katana collecting. I am looking for a nice WW2 katana and hope you can be of help with the one in the pictures. It has been offered to me and I like it very much. But is it an authentic one? Not messed with. Hope you can be of help, thanks Paul

A little hard to tell from those low res pictures but that looks basically new. Nice reproduction though I think!

Hi Jon, This Katana should be a WW2 production. When you click on the pictures the are bigger and show more detail. Paul

They are larger, but still not particularly detailed is what he means, Phoef.

Correct that is what I mean. If it is original it's in incredibly good condition.

Okay that looks more like it, a nice condition later type 98. The file marks on the nakago are a bit rushed and sloppy, but that might be understandable if it was wartime production.
I would like to see pictures of the kissaki And also know a total blade length measurement.
One of the difficulties these days is it seems like the Chinese manufacturers are getting better and better at simulating a patina of age.
Whether or not the seller has a good reputation is very important too! And I'm not talking about eBay feedback that means nothing!

I will let you see more pictures later, when I have the Katana in my possession. Paul

the blade looks authentic (i can't vouch for the fittings). signature looks like Mishina Yoshiaki [濃州住三品義明 - Noshu ju Mishina Yoshiaki].
it has a Seki arsenal stamp, indicating that it is not traditionally made (e.g. oil quench by the looks of the hamon).

ha ha... with a little searching, it looks like this blade was previously for sale and discussed here:

Google image search is, indeed, your friend.
