I'm looking for recommendations for cheap/reliable .223 and 5.56 ammo that isn't super dirty. I stuck with Winchester on my previous rifle, but I'm going to do a lot more training beyond range day. I'm wondering if anyone has come across any less expensive rounds without all the extra fouling.

Huge YMMV, but I’ve had good luck with PMC .223 55 grain. YMMV, because it’s gassy for some people.

I used a lot of Lake City back when Federal had the contract to run it (mostly branded as "American Eagle"). IMI/IWI, PMC, S&B and PPU have all run for me without issues.

Cheap and clean...almost mutually exclusive concepts.

Those are some of the options I have considered. The American Eagle did work work great for me as well, but they tend to run $0.20 more than some of the other brands mentioned. Thank you for the suggestions.

Cheap and clean...almost mutually exclusive concepts. I understand, which is why I'm trying to find the "good enough" without having to sacrifice on both of ends of the spectrum. Yes, I can find cheap, but will be dirtier. Yes, I can find clean, but will be more expensive. I'm looking for something in the middle that I will be comfortable with making my preferred training rounds, since I will be using 200-300 each shooting session, twice a month. I want to grab 100 rounds of a few different varieties, ranging from the $0.45-$0.65 per round to find what works best for my rifle and needs. Maybe there won't be much of a difference within the given price point, so staying below $0.50 could be acceptable for my purposes.

Reasonable pricing, free shipping on orders over $200 (that's a big deal) and legit operator. I have purchased over 20k rounds form them in the last 2 months. Fast and easy to work with. www.outdoorlimited.com/rifle-ammo/5-56x45mm-nato-ammo/?cid=677&search_text=&per_row=20&sortBy=8&mode=list

You can look for flash sales or bulk discounts at gun.deals . We used to use them to try to find the best price match at work.
