Dragon King Modern Katana Hey Andi! What do you think of your Modern Kat? I don't need anymore katana or wakizashi really, but I really like the menuki on those things. Strange question, and I wouldn't want you to damage your sword trying, but do you know if the menuki can come off/be removed?

I like mine for it's lightweight and balance. It's lighter than my Hanwei Tactical and less hilt heavy balanced than my APOC. The menuki are nice and not only resting on the tsuka like normal menuki but inlays in matching grip depressions, nevertheless protruding too. I didn't try to disassemble the grip but it has nuts. Dunno if there is epoxy.

The pictures I've seen of the menuki on the Modern Kat, Wak, and Tanto are just so beautiful! I wonder if I contacted Dragon King directly, if they'd sell them separately? I'd buy a set if I could.
Sounds like you got a nice sword there. Glad you like it. Thanks for sharing the picture and your thoughts on the menuki.

My 1796thc nervous breakdown... Windlass 1796 Heavy Cavalry Sword, Sharpe's sword... 1078g, PoB 18,5 cm / 7,x" from guard, strong distal taper but remaining thicker in the middle of the blade than the LC. Handling is ok for a cavalry saber, not terrible, but more blade heavy than the LC, a bit more than my H/T Viking, similar to my CS US 1860/1840, which isn't bad too, heavier but balanced with more weight in the hilt. Now I have to rewatch the whole Sharpe series, bloody right!

Wicked looking distal taper on that Andi, is the blade straight or does it have a very slight curve (as in 5mm)?

The edge is completely straight, full contact laying on a desktop. The absolute distal taper is like on the LC, but less concave, more meat in the middle of the blade. It's not so extreme like it looks on the photo, that's the angle of the shot.

What's the actual thickness at the base of the blade? Vs the claimed 9/32" (7.1mm)

My caliper isn't good, a bit more than 7,1 mm, ca. 7,3 mm? Middle of the blade ca. 4,5 mm Tip section ca 2,5 mm. A broad and deep fuller, could be pronounced better, but works.

Yes, I really like it, the handling is really ok. I expected a terrible blade heavy sword but as I said it's ok, a usable - cavalry - sword. I compared it to different sabers of mine and it feels much like my CS US 1860/1840 in the hand, which I like also. I had the same experience with the Windlass 1796 LC and the 1906. Both US saber repros are half a pound or more heavier but counterbalance the blade with the heavier hilt. Both 1796 have light hilts which make the absolute not heavy blades feeling more dominant. I assume adding some lead to the hilts will improve the handling. But as they are now they feel much like viking swords with solid blade presence for hacking and slashing. I generally prefer light and quick handling swords but I'm also really happy with these little brutes.
And yes, it does bring me joy, much joy!

Just got my Royal Armouries/Windlass/Matt Easton single-edge arming sword. First impressions = it's awesome. Very thin blade. Rings like a bell. Just have to put an edge to it. Can't wait to slice things with it.

Oh, that one is awesome. I love mine, it's a fun compact sword in the hand.

Uncanny. I was literally deciding whether to get one of these. I have the window open in my browser. Is it a sign?!

Legacy Arms New Excalibur The old one and the DSA don't have the right proportions, this has. The DSA is closer to the film prop, but the longer handle of the LA looks better to me and the grip allows better two handed use. Not a lightweight but usable one handed, good balance. Edit: Beside the blingbling it's just a good bastard sword. Funny thing, the blade is 1" shorter than my Windlass 1796 HC.

That hilt furniture is gorgeous. I especially love the cross guard.
