The samurai, spartans, vikings, and knights all engage one another in the world's largest group hug and agree to disagree while respecting one another's differences and cultures. g, I hope that "lol" is more sarcastic than I'm reading it, because "luke started it" is the response I'd have to berate a six-year-old for. it was sarcastic

Frankly the whole last 2 and a half pages only illustrated the immaturity of everyone involved. Had I moderator privileges, this tread wouldn't have made it past a couple posts. You should ALL be ashamed of yourselves regardless of age, education, or the amount of testosterone in your blood- none of those are an excuse for acting this way, especially on an internet forum where you can take your time and compose posts. Quite frankly I'm sorry that I can't smite you all enough. ramm was the only one being mature about this

So I suppose you dont have any, as most males have them in sufficient amounts to warrant investigation, despite age. well i'm 14 3/4 years old and testosterone is pumping which makes me want to fight back until i realize that i regret what i said..i am sorry I understand, I accept you apology and at the same time offer my own. We've all been there when we first get into using forums. I will try not to respond to any more of your comments in this thread, as hard as it may be....

But please, next time, dont incourage the argument by telling my and random that we have no balls, or whatever. Its simply not prudent.

Play football or something, dont release it on forums. I apologized, and so did you. I believe its time we end this.

I like a good farce. The original idea of the thread was good I think. Just a bit of fun imagining the obvious never woulda happened and no real answer. I run into trouble when I take things too seriously. I didnt really mind it either originally, but the fact of the matter is that this rascal is attempting to make a point that has neither the supports of reason nor logic, nor anything else for that matter. Declaring historical armor irrelevent by questioning it in a modern-day arena... ridiculous. Gunit, im not trying to make war with you. Please keep you forked tongue behind your teeth and I will do the same. However, If you choose to speak with historical accuracy and logic in mind, I will hail you as a friendly forumite. I tried to end it here, you wanted it to continue. Please, this is ridiculous, if you want the thread to end as well please stop trying to say I was just as immature as you.

BTW,The lambda on the Spartan shield is for Laconia; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laconia. Incidentally, this is the derivation of the modern English word "laconic" referring to the characteristically pithy, terse Spartan turn of phrase. Laconia today is the Provence or State that Sparta is the capitol of. Back then it referred to the Spartan way of speaking in short direct sentences. Over time it came to mean a geographic area. It is not likely that the would have had a symbol on their shields representing their speaking custom. This is not a matter a dialect, which was different across Greece, within their own dialect they spoke short minimalistic sentences. Another thing to consider is that while the Spartans were literate, reading and writing was more a means of communication. We do not have any great Spartan literature of poetry after 7th century BC. We do have from before they became a military society. For this reason it is not likely they would have had any alphabetic symbol on their shields. You've sort of missed the point of what I said, the MODERN word "laconic" refers back to the stereotype of the terse Spartan, it's not how they referred to themselves. I honestly do not know whether or not they decorated their shields in this fashion or not. Ah, just found some interesting material which confirms that state symbols were used as shield blazons, hence the Spartan's use of Lambda; www.ospreypublishing.com/content4.php/cid=203www.sparta.markoulakispublications.org.uk/index.php?id=116

hey guys don't sweat it that hard............an amicable discussion is turning sour for a few misunderstandings............Ramm is right from the Japanese arsenal my best guess is that a Naginata would be the only weapon that would be able to threat plate armor. As Ramm said in other thread, Japanese armor is varied ranging from lamellar armor to forged steel plates attached to a leather/silk/other material shirt of sorts. I'll divide this mix up in categories:
Armor:
1st place Knights = their platemail armor is the most protective armor of the four
2nd tie Samurai & Spartans = Samurai armor was adequate as it covered the vital parts of the warrior instead of encasing him in steel head to toe. The Spartans did much the same as the Samurai armor, protected the vitals, and the shield gave them a huge defensive edge, however their heaviness of the armor makes it a tie instead of a sole second place
3rd Vikings: Unlike modern movies and other sources, Vikings NEVER used plate, in fact they rarely used chain mail. Most of their armor was made of leather and/or covered in animal furs. Aside from helmet and shield, in armor terms, they were severely inferior to the other three.
Weapons:
1st place Triple tie Knights, Samurai and Vikings= Knights possesed the amplest selection of weapons of the four, but the Samurai and Vikings both possesed specific weapons that would counter the platemail armor namely the Danish Axe and the Naginata. Aside from that both Vikings and Samurai had equivalents in Spears and Swords
2nd? place Spartans = their long spears weren't for close quarters combat, and their short xiphos were inadequate against heavy armored knights, and more or less effective against samurai. The only ones they could muster an edge is on the Vikings and again their shields could offset their swords.
Discipline:
1st place Spartans = properly employed the phalanx formation was unbeatable both against cavalry and infantry. Under a skillful commander, melee combat (which i suppose would be the basis of this "competition") would be negated to zero for their opponents
2nd place Knights = either as heavy shock cavalry or dismounted walking tanks knights fighting as a unit were a terrible visage for enemies. However there is a big IF, knights were hungry for glory on the battlefield, and if they surrendered to their personal ambitions they could be broken
3rd place Samurai = in feudal Japan there were well organized armies consisting of cavalry, infantry and skirmish troops. Dismissing the Japanese as erratic fighters would be a big mistake, but like their western counterparts the knights, they had a tendency of seeking glory in the battlefield, and if they fought without cohesion, they would be easily broken.
4th place Vikings = Vikings were formidable one on one warriors, but when fighting as an organized army, much of their history is bleak, Stamford Bridge being the epitome of it. More of skirmishers and raiders, Vikings would hold an edge over any army that is less organized than them. One notable exception is the Byzantine Varangian Guard made up exclusively of Vikings and/or displaced Saxons (after the Norman Conquest).

He was not shadow smited, as you called it.
I smote him for his immature behavior which warranted no less. As soon as I can I will smite Luke and randomnobody as well. All three perpetuated the argument and presented base and rude comments about the others.
If we're going to keep karma a part of the forum, let's not baby people along with it. Give credit where credit is due, and the same with punishment.
