BTW,The lambda on the Spartan shield is for Laconia; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laconia. Incidentally, this is the derivation of the modern English word "laconic" referring to the characteristically pithy, terse Spartan turn of phrase. Laconia today is the Provence or State that Sparta is the capitol of. Back then it referred to the Spartan way of speaking in short direct sentences. Over time it came to mean a geographic area. It is not likely that the would have had a symbol on their shields representing their speaking custom. This is not a matter a dialect, which was different across Greece, within their own dialect they spoke short minimalistic sentences. Another thing to consider is that while the Spartans were literate, reading and writing was more a means of communication. We do not have any great Spartan literature of poetry after 7th century BC. We do have from before they became a military society. For this reason it is not likely they would have had any alphabetic symbol on their shields.

It's hot, certainly not bullet proof, inflexible, and rather clumsy cmpared to kevlar. It's also extremely bright, showy, and makes a lot of noise during movement.
All in all, very poor for modern day useage.

The Spartans. They're not wearing as much crap. Spartans probably carried more armor in terms of weight then Medieval foot knights. The spartan armor would have been helmet, breastplate, backplate, greeves, and shield. This would have had a lot of heavier bronze and more openings. The shields was about 15 lbs. It is speculated that a spartan went into battle with 60 lbs of armor verse a medieval foot-knight with 30 to 40 lbs.

ouch.... not very nice Luke. gunit, 'twould have been best to respond in a more mature fashion. I don't resent you for posting misinformation here, I sort of enjoy passing what I know. I've been wrong frequently - we learn and grow from it, and being corrected is the best way to learn

..... I am forever empressed with Gunit's maturity. This thread is a farce, and the questions posed are nothing but immature and without reason.

how about we put this behind us and just talk positive about these four cultures When you cease your attempts to belittle historical arms by applying it to modern context, I will cease my attempts to belittle your reason and intelligence.

I like a good farce. The original idea of the thread was good I think. Just a bit of fun imagining the obvious never woulda happened and no real answer. I run into trouble when I take things too seriously.

I run into trouble when I take things too seriously. I didnt really mind it either originally, but the fact of the matter is that this rascal is attempting to make a point that has neither the supports of reason nor logic, nor anything else for that matter. Declaring historical armor irrelevent by questioning it in a modern-day arena... ridiculous. Gunit, im not trying to make war with you. Please keep you forked tongue behind your teeth and I will do the same. However, If you choose to speak with historical accuracy and logic in mind, I will hail you as a friendly forumite.
