Nice haul. What's the weight of them? The smallest one comes in at 1LB 5.2 oz, the long leaf with the single inscription weighs in at 1LB 12.7 Oz and the shiny double-inscribed one weighs in at 2Lbs 0.9 oz.

If it doesn't cut through an enemy helmet, it'll at least make a big dent.

Matt Easton put up a kukri video yesterday that's kind of interesting. He talks about guards on kukris and why they're not really needed. He also talks a bit about "the cache." What I found myself wishing for is more detail about how exactly kukris were used in combat.

With Matt its important to remember his expertise isnt in khukuris although he has several videos, his videos however are always nice and entertaining. Is it his voice? Or enthusiasm? Dont know but I like him. I think his video reminds us about the design of the khukuri, isnt a coincidence. It looks like it does for many reasons. Wanting to change this, may occur because lack of understanding of its historical use and how it is effectively used today. What we dont understand, we may want to change. I think I have a conservative approach to khukuris. Dont change the khukuri, change your level of knowledge instead. How it was used in combat many people knows, me I am more interested in it as an everyday tool. Some villagers khukuris.

I’ve heard the desire to change the khukuri as it’s outdated. My response to that is if it is changed it is no longer a khukuri; if you don’t like best buy something else. For me I like knowing how they were used in combat, but more so in everyday life. I’ve been following a video series of rural life in Nepal with interest. Thank you for sharing “Nepali Khukuri Show”, I ended up subscribing. I found the variety of khukuris interesting. The flat spine version is more popular than I realized. There was one that was a take-off on the GI4, aka Mk3, at mark 2:44. Also it answered a long standing question I had as to the price the locals pay.

Thanks for the video. I always like what Easton has to say and seeing products. However since his review on Windlass’ Mk3 vs my experience and now seeing that video I cannot but think that somewhere along the line Easton is receiving some gratitude. That is not saying he is giving misinformation, far from it, but what he doesn’t say and our tastes vary. Certainly no issue with that, it’s just that our tastes vary. I’ll add here that his Mk3 video was not an influencing force on me buying one. It had been on the list for some time and am getting my use out of it. It's the baggage that came with it that I have an issue with.
As for the first knife in this video; it’s pretty, nice, shiny, and all, but not my thing. The grip is polished horn as my first kukri was. I didn’t have a choice in that case and couldn’t figure out why an unpolished blade with a polished grip. I ended up putting friction tape around the grip so that I could better hold on. My next had an unpolished blade and unpolished horn handle that I liked much better. He’s talking about grip length being longer and putting the ridge between the first pair and second pair of fingers with the grip extending beyond both sides of his hand. I’ve seen that statement in other of his videos, I believe the one on the Mk3 included. The grip on my newer production kukris are longer and fatter than the antiques. My GI4 has a long grip, 5½", and I finally found my spot was at the heel with the ridge between my index and middle finger. My Mk3 the same with its shorter grip. But this is not true for all my kukris. Proving that is not a hard and fast rule.
As for the last two he is saying what I discovered long ago with swords. The lighter is faster and more nimble, while the heavier one is more powerful. Which is better? That depends.

Which is better? That depends. I agree with much, first but not least. Let us remember that he has a vast interest of blades and other weapons, Khukuris is one of them. However, he is not an "expert" on the subject. I believe its just not possible to be with so many other interests. I posted it because, I like him and find his videos entertaining. He may be recieving gratitude, and if so I`d wish he would say so. Necessery to be aware of also in posts here. Agreeing with that to, shiny is not my thing either. But that blade is probably never going to be used as intended. And thats in line with whats sold most of the time, yes we can talk about fighting khukuris, but of these. How many will actually be used for it? The majority of manufacturers know most khukuris they sell will be more decorative then anything else. And thats nothing wrong with that, just a thing to keep in mind. I can see people really getting into those blades from Kailash, they do look lovely. I think especially their Salayani has happy customers. And it is a blade you are paying attention to when seeing. But its not a khukuri for me. Yes the lighter vs heavier is absolutely a "it depends" type of discussion. To avoid confusion I must point out that KHHI`s system of "Gurkha Issue", is to my knowledge made up. They need to put up some evidence for it to support the claims they are making.

I think we are on the same track. Khukuris are not Easton’s strong point outside of collecting. The only time I’ve seen him use one was him demonstrating the Mk3 and he seemed a bit awkward. Give him a sabre and it’s a ballet. I believe the vast majority of kukris sold to the outside world are not sold as working blades nor will never be used as such. I’ve watched what our members bought and the vast majority come from GGK. Regardless of the vendor virtually all are polished, shiny knives and seem to be looked at and judged as art, not just by the purchaser but those commenting. I find absolutely nothing wrong with that. But for me I look for a tool, and those are not for me. As far as combat, I believe this is where the kukri got its reputation and a dare say that most do not see that role. I have an antique that I’m sure was specifically designed for such and was my number one backup. That has since been replaced by my GI4 although the antique handles better. That with a shield is an awesome combination. Having said that I see little to zero probably of mine seeing that role. And I certainly hope not. As for me holding KHHI in some high esteem I’ll say no. My first three came from them and after my interest was renewed I looked at them and others. I liked their prices and since contacted Tamang and found him a pleasure to deal with and have continued dealing with him finding their product good rather than reinventing the wheel, so to speak.

True, I have seen it before, people trying to do many things at the same time, its difficult. I couldnt do it, and a think very few could. But he seems like a jolly chap and I think his videos work great at sparking interest in Khukuris. I encourage everyone to search his channel and look at what he has put up on the subject. Khukuris from GGK has never interested me and since your review of the Windlass, I have changed my mind about them. Before I knew they were not great but had a historical value, now I am quite hesitant recommending them, despite the historical aspect. That we share 100 %! A tool, that what it is. With many more meanings I will ever know, but still a tool. Dont know if you have seen this, as a comment on how understanding of one thing flows over to the understanding of something else.

Matt has an unboxing video with khukuris from Kailash. So this is why my order was delayed, they were making Matts! I jest, they were probably made at the same time. Honestly I haven't been impressed with the ordering process and I think I am going to sell off one of the blades I ordered right off the bat to keep my collection manageable.

Thats really sad hearing about. When recieved perhaps you could write a short review? I thought their ordering process was smooth? If its not people should know. It would be great for me and others if you later could share your experience. If delayed you should e-mail them and let them know. Well if you in the end are happy, thats great. But in the end you are not happy, you should tell us I think. A negative review is as useful as a positive one, perhaps even more.

I'll be telling you either way, don't worry.
I don't think their product is bad, the process of customization just wasn't as simple as advertised. I rarely got updates, I often had to message and ask. Many small things got messed up along the way (handle colour, sheath construction, engraving) and was only spotted by me from a photo.
I ended up getting cold feet when I did get an unsolicited progress photo and the inscription was not at all what I asked for. I just had the guys scrub half the inscription from the blades and cancel inscribing anything else because suddenly I though "I would probably not be able to sell such a personalized blade, and the execution is not meeting my expectation so how would it meet a potential buyers on the secondhand market?". At that moment I realized I wasn't as invested as I had been at the start and that if I was thinking about selling one already that maybe I should back out entirely. I almost called the whole thing off in the end but decided that the guys definitely do care and put hard work in and it's my responsibility after the fact, so I decided to let them arrive and make decisions then.
I predict the blades will be amazing and light and simple, as advertised. I predict that their strength will be in sticking to the catalogue they offer and that those blades will be perfect. I think customization is where things get hard owing to communication problems and, presently, pandemic problems. If you are gonna go custom -pay Andrew the money for a drawing. It will make your life easier and the result will be better.
Andrew was great, he also refunded the inscription money and offered to be a go-between for me and the smiths to make sure the Kukris arrived as I imagined them. I just lost confidence that they would be as I wanted them to be after the inscription debacle and so I felt the need to "simplify". From what I can see, the blades look like they will be beautiful.

Hello pgandy, Just for the sake of clarity, as I hope one day you may give him a try, Purna Darnal (GGK) could provide you with any khukuri style you would like, with any blade finish(even acid wash or black-coat are also available) you would like, with any handle finish you would like, at least anything that KHHI could do minus the Kydex work. It will also come to you with a shaving sharp edge out of the box. You can even say you want it thicker/more robust or thinner in edge geometry. I am just clearing the air on this as a long-time custom purchaser (as you know) with him. After all, If someone can deliver upon something polished and shiny, it is not outside their capabilities to provide something to you less so. Shoot, if you want, I would even personally speak to him myself and get a quote for you and/or answer any questions you may have for him. I am just a PM away, buddy. Thanks for the offer. From the photos I’ve seen and from the comments on his work I’d say it is outstanding. And it amazes me how he can take a drawing of something that he has never seen and satisfy so many people with the outcome. I may just take you up on that offer as I’d like a duplicate of that 15” antique, not just in appearance, that part is easy, but handling as well. I suspect that he would come closer than anyone doing that. I’m dry for this year but perhaps next. Thanks again. Earlier today I did a little work in the garden and chose the Windlass Mk3. It is not of highest quality but for some reason I’m attracted to it. And for the chore it had today it was the best for the job except my 8” jobby, they would pretty much tie. For what it’s doing I’d say that it’s giving me the best bang for the buck. I’ll have to admit that it required some work on my part, Windlass certainly didn’t do it. And as much as I like it I’m not recommending it except to someone that likes to tinker and is willing to spend the time.
