Has anyone bought items from Olay8 on ebay? He lists fraudulent items as being genuine period pieces when you can clearly see they are not! This is just an example... He had a set one time that he wrote a book on how old it was and that the tsuba was signed, and it was clearly garbage. These freakin tsubas look cheap from the moon and still have casting chips on them! He's saying this koshirae is from Edo period...are you kidding me? Look at the menuki! Look at the last picture of the tsuba! Do you see what I see? These things have never been mounted on a sword... never. cgi.ebay.com/Sword-Katana-Set-Mounts-Copper-seppa-Tsukamaki-Koshirae_W0QQitemZ120299970305QQihZ002QQcategoryZ475QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemI'm sure I don't have to warn anyone on this forum to not buy what he claims is genuine. I will not lie and say Ive never bought off of him, some of his stuff is nice and I knew what I was getting. I actually bought 2 tsubas from him knowing they weren't the real thing, I just liked the design and mounted them on some low end blades, but c'mon! I actually called this guy on his s*it and he wrote back "I gets these things from a dealer and I know little about them . I will inquire as to the age again"(something to that effect) Listen, if someone is selling something that they genuinely don't have much info on and writes a little "askew" as to the description just to get people to buy and is not blatantly trying to rob people, then all is forgiven. This seller has given that answer to other people I know and NEVER got back to them . Sorry bout the rambling but I feel he will sell just as much if not more if he's just honest with his buyers. His prices aren't bad and if you looking to dress up a blade quickly and at low cost, then he's your guy. Sorry all gotta run, I've just won one of his genuine "damascus looking" nihonto!

Oh, I remember this guy. I've seen "Edo period blades" pass through this guys store for a buy it now price of $120.00.
They weren't banged up, either, they looked fine. They had a fake hada and everything. Sickening really.

Yeah, this seller (among others linked to him) specializes in fake and repro swords that he claims to be antique, along with obviously modern made low-quality pieces that he claims to be antique.
This kind of selling is old hat, and it is up to the buyer to know better. I'm kinda over being upset about it, and have just learned to live with it.

Doesn't ebay have something set up so you can report people like that?

You would have to buy something from him, then report it, then rather than confront him Ebay will try to "work things out between buyer and seller" like a refund or something. He would probably only get a warning anyway.

There are scores of sellers that do the same thing and new ones are always appearing, so you really wouldn't be making a dent. Besides, there really is no way to prove to eBay that his items are not antique.

That's a shame, seems like it would be in ebay's best interest to weed out obvious fraud. Caveat emptor I suppose.

You know what a great idea would be? Make a site that warns everyone about these things, it could be updated on a day to day or weekly basis, you could have guides for telling the different between wallhanger, repro or real period pieces.
I think that would be a great site.

I think that would be a great site. Well...they already do. But warning people of individual Ebay stores would be good as well. Hmm...Well, it is really just one of those "Buyer beware" moments, you really have to kno what you're buying. You can't expect someone to tell you, " These are real", and expect them to actually be real.

Ebay is rife with this sort of @#$%&*. I've seen it with swords a lot for sure... and I've seen even worse with Cars. I used to, as a side job, buy cars off Ebay and wholesale them to dealships localy. I worked two jobs for two differant dealer groups... so I had a lot of contacts. I focused on a few specific models... and just with those few models I constantly saw scam adds. Sometimes people would copy pictures from someones eles add and use those pictures to try and sell their own scam... sometimes they would copy an add word-for-word. Hell, I even saw an add from someone for a car that I had BOUGHT and SOLD 2 months earlier. The point of this slightly off-topic rant? Be very VERY carefull at all times when dealing with Ebay sellers... WHATEVER they are selling. There are a lot of good deals to be found... but getting to them requires navigating a minefield of scam artists and snake oil salesmen. It's an extension on the basic principle of the internet. You know how some people become HUGE duchebags on chat and forums, when if you were face to face with them in real life they might not say word one? The annonimity and protection provided by the internet imboldens people to do stupid crap... and this is MANY times worse with shady scam artists. End Rant.

Usually the rule of thumb is: If it is too good to be true, it IS!!!!!!!! This is, for the most part, true. However... not always... As I said, I used to buy and then wholesale cars off Ebay as a side job. In order to wholesale a car I have to sell it to a dealer cheap enough that they can turn around and sell if for a decent profit. Thus, *I* have to aquire the car at a REALLY good price in order for me to make money. I was able to do this more then a few times... which means if you sift carefully threw the crap, you KNOW the product your looking at back and front, you CAN score some awesome deals on Ebay. I only wish my knowledge of swords was equal to my knowledge of cars... then maybe I could sift threw the garbage and find the awesome deals. Alas, I do not trust myself to do so.

I hate that these sellers can get away with the 'white lies' regarding their products; I find it to be dishonorable as well as distasteful and call them on it when/if I see them at it.

I think you'll agree that vigilante moderating causes more problems than it cures... Marc, your response was not an appropriate response from a moderator. In fact, it was just rude. An appropriate response from you would have been, "Your concern is noted, thank you for pointing this out to me, we'll see what we can do to correct it." Mind you, I made no mistake... I was just pointing out the obvious. It's not like the title of the thread doesn't clearly indicate what the thread is about. Any moderator worth his salt would have found this and removed it long before I left my mark. On the rude note, talking to someone as if they are a child is extremely insulting and that's exactly what you did to me, whether you realize it or not. I now have no respect for you, and that's really disappointing. May I make an observation? Many of us are here to spend money at the SBG store. I'm sure that Mr. Southren would be pleased that a mod is pissing on his potential customers...

I've forwarded my concern to an administrator. They are in charge of it now.
