So I decided to do a viking sword from Purna this time around, it is going to be a single edge viking sword inspired by Albion's Berserkr. Here is a sketch of the guard, grip and pommel. I'll update with more once I get more photos from Purna.

I think you may be personally putting Purna's kids thru college
That may be the case, haha !
Impressive project, do you know how he will tackle the pommel and the guard ?
Great question! The lower guard is peened, but the pommel should be pinned to the lower guard. That's the typical construction method. I don't think dear Eric should tell him to "screw it" either. I know, I'm such a jerk.

(it actually feels good by the way, I don't feel them if I wear gloves mine guard is quite big actually and the pommel makes it a bit heavier than anticipated but the balance feels good )

That is a good question, I haven't said anything to him about that just yet as I want his focus on the blade at this moment. I may just have him build it as a solid piece of mild steel.
What blade length did you go for? Albion's Berserkr is similar to their double edged viking age swords, but if I recall correctly, most viking swords in this style were a bit shorter.

Yeah I was on the fence on if I should go with a shorter blade length, but I just went with the same blade length that Albion chose for the berserkr as well which is 29 5/8".
A one piece construction for the pommel is valid. I think the construction method our ancestors used worked for them. This will work as well.
If you look at the Albion Berserkr sword they also did a one piece construction on the pommel, so not all viking pieces were two piece construction. If Peter Johnson designed it as one piece well thats a plus and he knows his stuff.

Oh yes, I forget there are historical examples like this. Maybe it's just about convenience. For some smiths it was more convenient to make two pieces and join them together, and for others the one piece construction was easier. Or maybe the two piece construction was an older method that fell out of favor?

So the Balaur Arms type H due to arrive today is a two piece construction so will be nice to have both a one piece and a two piece in my collection when I get Purna's sword.

I have two swords of the same type in my collection and it feels redundant sometimes. I tried unloading one of them, but it's an uncommon type and no one else is interested in it. I hope you enjoy both of them.

mrstabby: Mine gets pressed to the top as well, but that way the tip gets ground of, don't like that either. Unfortunately I'm an edge-perfectionist. Also one wrong move when unsheathing and the throat nicks the edge on either side.

AndiTheBarvarian: Perhaps I've got one from the batch for Matt Easton ?!?

AndiTheBarvarian: When I draw the saber it's automatically pressed with the spine to the scabbard so there's space for the edge to not touch the scabbard. When the false edge starts it's released but can be carefully draw completely without touching the scabbard.

AndiTheBarvarian: Too little gap for a needle, so also I see no way to get the glue in.

mrstabby: I was easily able to poke through the glue on all of my Windlass swords/daggers, then it just seems to wick in forever, it never was thick. I can't imagine how there isn't any dulling though, unless yours is less wide or the scabbard is bigger.

AndiTheBarvarian: There's not really an opening on mine, very good fit of guard and blade and some glue or epoxy in it. Since my scabbard doesn't dull the edge too I seem to be on the lucky side with Windlass this time.

mrstabby: Maybe it screams in pain now, but I like it..
