Is a cold steel cutlass machete good for using against an intruder and self-defense?

Is a cold steel cutlass machete good for using against an intruder and self-defense? Not as good as a shotgun or a handgun of sufficient caliber. If your intruder is armed, he's going to probably be armed with a gun. Rule number one about gun fights, never take a sword to a gunfight.

Just counting Bladed options the CS cutlass machete is among the best (if not THE best) choice price wise.

Is a cold steel cutlass machete good for using against an intruder and self-defense? To answer the question which I neglected to do in my first post... YES the CS machete would be a good choice. For the record I do have a cold steel Gladius near my bed should the need arise. The various CS machete like blades would in my opinion be devastating in close quarter combat against an unarmored opponent... but as noted above, my large dog and my nightstand pistol (SiG P320 in .45 with surefire) are my first line of defense.

I feel like the CS machete would do just as well as any other machete made by Condor or Imacasa for example. Its a sharpened chunk of steel, it will do the job in the right hands.

I keep a CS cutlass in the trunk of the car, makes a good utility blade beyond your garden variety 3" edc folder should a need arise.

The cutlass machete's not a bad choice by any means. I'd prefer the chinese war sword machete if there's space and the barong machete in close quarters. I have all three of the above and most of the others.

From your administrator Originally, yes. But I can tell you for a fact that no manufacturer today expects that the sword they sell to a customer is sold for the purpose of fighting or killing another human being. That is the definition of a weapon.
It's semantics, but in this case I think semantics are important.
If a judge ruled that swords are not weapons and the dictionary definition does not cleanly fit modern day replicas, then they can't be considered weapons anymore than a kitchen knife can be considered a weapon (and out of the two, I would bet my left you know what that the number of knife attacks with household kitchen knives FAR outweighs the number of people attacked with SLOs and the number of people attacked by SLOs is much higher than the number attacked by functional blades).
Yes, they can be weaponized. But the whole point of the article is that in the age of the gun, they are obsolete as weapons and they are NOT designed to be used on other people, period (and references to combat use are really just tongue in cheek).
You may buy them because they resonate with you to an age when they were a weapon, but I don't see any armies lining up without firearms and choosing swords because they are obsolete..
As a side note, it is shame to see so much arguing here - the industry is under attack from every angle right now and right now we need to show a united front. But as I can see that will not happen, I will bow out of this conversation too.
It will be hard to fight for the rights of collectors if collectors will not band together. But even if I have to stand alone to try and protect this hobby we all love, then so be it.sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/59195/feedback-wanted-article-swords-weaponswww.sword-buyers-guide.com/are-swords-weapons.htmlwink wink

I saw the thread title and thought it was about using the cutlass machete while invading homes.

CS has a good reputation concerning their machetes. I have several CS but not that model. While there are better options against home invasions what you are contemplating is not a bad idea and does have some advantages over a firearm. A machete is king in my country, a very versatile tool indeed. I’ve used them for everything from digging holes to pest control. You might try looking up ‘machete’ using Wikipedia to get an idea. I don’t know but the CS Cutlass Machete may have a bit too much flex for giving point reliably but with a keen edge should be an excellent chopper and manageable in restricted areas such as a home.

I have one. I like it a lot. If that's what I had on hand in an emergency, you bet it would work just dandy.

The CS cutlass machete is, imo, aesthetically challenged. Why not defend your home with some style?

I have one and I also like it. I believe the CS machtetes are made in South Africa by a third party. I believe I heard that from the We All Juggle Knives YouTube channel. A nice feature is that the metal goes all around the D-guard. I also have thr Magnum Kukri with my camping gear for any bushwhacking. That would be nice for a field expediant self defense tool (not a weapon) as well. I modified my CS Cutlas some. I reduced the width of the blade. It's much easier to point and recover now (sorry I'm not sure I'm getting the fencing terms correct.) I also Dremeled some zig-zaggy chevrons in the handle for a beter grip.
