Hello angrythor and welcome to the forum. I have absolutely no experience with fighting animals so take this with a grain of salt. I'd take a light cutlass with hand protection and a little bell attached.

A spear. You need a spear.

A spear. You need a spear. Nothing beats this if size is no issue, especially for bear, and can be used as a staff. If a blade, then a long, light but sturdy thrusting type as big as legal or desired.

Welcome to the forum Thor. I was going to suggest a long pointy sword as I’ve had good luck with such against dogs. I have not drawn any blood , just presenting the point was sufficient as they could not figure out how to get around it. A spear has been mentioned and is an excellent option. That could also be used as a walking stick. But they are just some thoughts off the top of my head as you have said nothing regarding the type of animals in question, nor your surroundings. Believe it or not an umbrella has worked great for me. A small one, called a sombrilla in my country, that is easily carried in the hand, tucked under the belt, or back pack when pointed at the animal and opened and closed in rapid session while advancing, a yell would not hurt, towards the animal has worked every time for me. Such a thing as which “as best” does not exist as such. There are many options and only you can decide which will be best in your case. Sombrilla

What animals are these though? I was curious about that too. Seems like anything other than bears and big cats, he would be better off with a stout walking stick or staff and some pepper spray (this works good on bears though).

Yup....pepper spray and a spear. A sword would be kinda useless say, up against a big Grizzly Bear.

Been right here...hangin' at the casa. Been busy lately. Got a few projects in the works. A shield and spear for a buddy of mine and a bodice dagger for my wifes upcoming birthday. She has plenty of space to put it.

Interesting. I was out in the forest recently. My journey took me to a clearing, far from civilization (about a half mile). I felt uneasy, as if something was watching me. Suddenly, out of nowhere, I realized that I was surrounded by a pack of ravenous tree dwelling rats. They looked hungry and quite agitated. I reached for my trusty claymore but realized it was not at the ready. I had stupidly left it at home. I was lucky to have escaped with my life.
Moral of this story... beware, the forest is dark and full of terrors. Don't forget your claymore.
