Is the partial back edge sharp? As for "historical", I don't think I've seen that particular combination of features, but pretty much everything (ring, tapered blade, back edge, curved hilt, curvature of blade, size) appears on historical examples, and the combination is plausible. You can see a good range of those features here: www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.959288364116914Thank you very much Timo; great info! The back edge is not cutting sharp; Holger ordered it unsharpened because he is not used to that kind of blade; but its "butterknife" sharp.

That's a great link! And I have to take back 2 of my points about the sword because one of the examples pictured there has a comparable curvature in the grip and another has a pommel of similar size. So the only thing that MIGHT be ahistorical, is the long false edge. MAYBE, watch, someone else will post another link and I'll discover I'm wrong again!
THIS is why I love this forum!!!

My first karate instructor looked a lot like Holg. He would warm up by breaking 2x4s with his forearms. A guy once threatened him with a knife and he stove the guys skull in with an open palm hit.
I don't judge people by how they look because they can be hiding some crazy skills that I don't know about.
And stop letting the trolls spoil your fun. Most of them couldn't spell swarde if their life depended on it.

Actually Holger is ex-karate, ex-taekwondo, ex-kickboxing... nothing famous of course, some local tournaments, he showed me old "video 8" tapes from the 80ies and 90ies. Due to his severe health problems and medication he lost most of his agility and footwork and gained too much weight. But when he hits his sandsack(?) Or punching bag?) you HEAR it.

Most of them couldn't spell swarde if their life depended on it. My first martial arts teacher (traditional/sport CMA) was built similarly. On top of competing in traditional/sport forms (think 360 kicks & landing in splits) he did submission grappling/ early-form “No Holds Barred” fighting later on in his life. He taught CMA because it was a bigger draw (early 2000’s) but would get us to spar mixed constantly and teach more effective stuff if you gave it the time. Tough dude. A lot of dudes built like that are reservoirs of strength and a lot of the times injuries or other diagnoses + age are all it is. I mean, look at Khabib Nurmagomedov’s late dad Abdulmanap, wonder who talked bad about his shape to his face. And I’ll second the notion that it looks like a Medieval Saber/ Messer cross. Lutel and Pavel Moc both had examples that are relatively similar, and if it’s a Regenyei you’ve gotta expect it’s at least based on something. This was their “Type X Kriegsmesser”, yes? Might have seen something in a museum/ private collection not readily available online or put together an amalgamation of features, doesn’t make it a-historic. Looking through Google under “crazy kriegsmesser” there is plenty that seems plenty close enough. Pfff, tell them to bring their “Historical Correctness” to Regenyei.

SO many older (especially formerly competitive) martial artists look like that, barring the ones who can afford expensive surgeries and cutting edge Testosterone-Replacement-Therapy as they age.

That’s one impressive sword. Who cares whether it’s historical or not as long as you like it. I’d hate to be on the receiving end of that thing.

"Historically Correct" is a difficult subject.
What makes something correct... - Shape, Design and Function - Materials - Manufacturing
These 3 main criterias can be fullfilled to varying degree. You could really push it by making a 1:1 replica with steel made in a historic furnace... ...which would render 99,9% of reproductions less acurate or "correct".
On first look it is not a typical Kriegsmesser, but most features can be found in different examples. Which makes it still believable in a historical context.
If you spend some time looking at historical swords, every now and then, you will find an example completly defying all the classifications, general characteristics, etc. you have seen before.
So my personal and honest conclusion is, it sits somewhere in the middle between the highly accurate reproductions (like 1:1 replicas) and fantasy blades. Which is also the place where most production reproduction swords are aswell.

I actually hate watching my own videos because I got the middle age spread happening. Never had that before, but since my knee is destroyed I can't move like I used to. I look like a jelly-roll and move like Frankenstein's monster. Add that to a job where I sit down most of the day and it's very hard to be fit. But make no mistake, I might have some mobility issues, but I know a lot of dirty tricks.....

Looks like a Swiss saber to me (or in this case a swish saber). Yes it has that looks too; butits so big! Its a "montante" saber/messer mutant hybrid - 143 cm tip to pommel.

O.o What is more positive: Holger said handling, admiring, polishing and doing some stuff with all his steel really hardened his hands and forearms; while theyre not packed with muscles they are very strong, and a strong grip (while problems in the left hand/elbow have started as well). Good example: opening those damned pickle jars with the right hand is a joke for him!

I think the sword looks cool looking, who cares if its historical looking or not, unless you are posting a take a look at my historical looking sword and implying its that. I would like to see you dandelion holding the sword to see how it looks compared to Holg holding it. Attachments:

Now that is a deceptively intimidating picture. Somehow both wholesome and menacing.
I think just responding with that portrait there from the get-go should have squashed Reddit’s “historical-correctness” debate in it’s tracks.
Also gotta reiterate that that is a beast of sword, goodness. Still looks like it has good amount of agility to it, too.

Very cool sword.
Also, Reddit is where I go if I want to make a bad day worse.
