I have a Windlass 1860 Union light cavalry saber that I would like to modify. I would like to remove the entire hilt, which is peened at the pommel cap. What is the ideal way of removing the hilt? I do not want to keep the hilt, if that helps. So I don't care if it is marred or destroyed.

Looks to me like if you grind the peen, it will all slide off. But I'll defer to the experts...

The tang peen is what holds things together. The tang is curved and may be glued. If glued, heat it and tap. To remove the peen cleanly, center punch and a series of drills. Less clean, just use a file or grinder and remove the peen (and as much of the cap as you care to). At any rate, even if not glued, you may need a mallet.
Good luck GC

You'll need to grind down the peen, and then hit it out with a punch.
Actually, if you don't want the hilt, and are okay letting me have it I'll dismount it for you if you want.

I disassembled one of these several years ago. I simply sanded off the peen. There wasn’t a lot of metal to remove so it didn’t take long. I don’t think there was any glue either.
