I finished a project. Finally. I bought this sword last summer from Jpfranco here on the forum. It's a discontinued Windless. The first few pictures show what the sword looked like when I bought it. There are a few progress pictures. I'll take more next time as those are the most interesting. Then there are a bunch of photos of the finished piece. It's a rather short type XIV. I'll briefly list what i did to the sword. -Reground, repolished, and sharpened the blade. -Moved the guard up the blade about an inch in order to enlarge the tang. -Polished and blued the guard and pommel. -Made a new grip core from wood and epoxy putty. Then wrapped it in leather. I made the entire scabbard and belt from scratch including the buckle. I carved the wood core from poplar. It's wrapped in upholstery leather. the metal fittings are from 16gauge scrap and hand filed. The whole thing fits the sword quite well. I really like the way the fittings came out. I'm also very proud of the chape. It's my own idea of how to deal with the limitations of not being able to make a steel chape. I don't think I've ever seen one quite like it. I personally think it's very cool. If anyone would like to know I can explain how to do it, it's quite simple. The sword is really light now, and handles extremely well. It's cuts pretty well too. My next project will be built on a deltin blade. It's going to be awesome! My main regret is that I used modern rivets. Next time I'll use nails instead. Comments or questions are quite welcome. Criticisms are too I suppose ;D Click to enlarge the pictures:

Thanks man, I am really proud of how it came out. You could say it took a year since I bought it last summer but other then a little work on the blade I did about 90 percent of the work in the last month or so. To be honest there are things that the pictures don't show. There are a few grind marks on the blade. stuff like that. I'm aiming for a higher level of finish on my next sword.
(edit) The blade is just a tad over 25". It's short but really fast which makes it fun to cut with. I don't really think of it as a knightly sword because of the size, maybe an archer's sword or a riding sword.

What is the chape made out of? You did an AWESOME job with that, +1.
Can you elaborate on how you made the chape, what it is, etc? Maybe even a close-up? I'm in need of a chape, and making one would be nice...
Thanks, and good work!

Well it's actually fairly simple. I'd seen some leather chapes that looked good but wore very quickly. I saw one scabbard that had worn through to the wood. So I wanted to at least have a metal tip. So I took a large bolt and rounded off the head so it was less recognizable. Then I used epoxy putty to kind of cover the whole connection between it and the wood. I glued the scabbard leather down over that. Then I sanded the whole thing down so there weren't any bumps and I wrapped it in the leather thong you see in the photo. (I used the same leather thong to make the risers on the scabbard) I used shoe polish on both the leather thong and the belt so they'd match. Obviously you can do a lot of variations on the basic idea. It lends itself to pointy swords though. I'm not sure that it would look good on say a viking sword. I hope this makes sense -Nathan

Thanks for the diagram! I'm making a scabbard with Yeoldegaffers excellent step by step tutorial on his site, and I can't afford to buy a $35 chape on top of all the tools that most people would have but I don't, lol. ;D I may try a variation of this with my project...
+1!

It's good to know that we have some very creative people here at the very humble SBG forums.
