Always a fan of the Royal Navy and enjoy all the movies/series created around it (Horatio Hornblower, Master and Commander) as well as all the Jack Aubrey books.
I am looking to get an vintage Sword and dirk...what do I need to know/watch out for, esp fakes...
Thanks .....

One difficulty for the older stuff is that it's pre-pattern, so many things are impossible to identify reliably, in the absence of reliable provenance. If it's a RN weapon you want, then this can be a problem. If you're happy with a weapon that might have been an RN weapon, less of a problem. As for fakes, watch for naval swords and dirks from Indian makers like Weapon Edge and Universal Swords. The Cold Steel naval dirks I've seen were also made in India. I like the big pre-lionhead dirks, but only have replicas (WE and CS). One thing to watch for is Indian bone-handled tourist-trade knives being sold as curved dirks. Perhaps some actually served as naval dirks, but most I've seen sold as "naval dirks" have been modern and low-quality. Some examples can be seen in vikingsword.com/vb/showthread.php?t=14836A nice online resource: www.navyhistory.org.au/officers-swords-of-the-royal-navy-a-brief-history/
