Ah, so
I would defer then to the experts and wonder about the Catellerault poincon on the guard and also the ferrules.
Cheers GC

Sorry, but I see ,,Septembre 1813,, not the infamous ,,Octobre''. I have no problem with the spine text. The ricasso has the right proportions. The grip is good, with 12 turns of wire, the ferule and the joining of the side bars up against the pommel cap makes this an AN XIII Dragoon. According to l'Hoste the AN XIII Cuirassier should have the Mouton and Beaumont poinçons. The pommel cap accoulade is well cut and has the right proportions. Uncut, the blade should be 97.5 cm long. Before the cutting in 1816 these had the leather scabbards like we see with the replica. I don't think a replica leather scabbard would fit. Blade here is too beefy. Poinçons look well stamped and clear cut, what's left of them anyway. The Chatellerault stamp makes no difference. The poinçon of Fadates de Saint Georges (1852-1855) and the numbers under it look well made, sharp and clear. I have no problems here. It could very well be that the pallasch was inspected there at the time to see whether it could do service again, but now as an M1854 Dragoon. Or it went straight into storage and looking at the broken wire, was used again in the 1870-1871 French - German war. Who knows? There is even a nice little poinçon on the ferule. If the peen head is good there is no reason to think this pallasch was slapped together of old parts by some seller. Looking at the pommel cap dome I do not see the raw filing one would associate with amateur hanky panky. It looks quite intact. I have seen many M1854 with blade variations and of course M1816 hilts on M1854 blades. To me this pallasch looks okay. I would buy it if it had a scabbard. Speaking of scabbards: The steel Universal replica Dragoon scabbard fits this blade. For storage of the blade I would suggest to try to get hold of one. If you were to file the drag down to the right proportions, bang it about a bit and dunk it in the garden for the winter and clean it up a bit in the Spring, it would not stand out. If I look at the pictures it looks like this one is from Bertrand Malvaux. If so, there is no reason to worrie at all. Nice pallasch!
Cheers.

Thank you everyone for your inputs, I got it from a reputable source so I wasnt too worried about it. Interesting that its a dragoon saber and not a cuirassier, I have a couple of l'Hoste books but my french is not good enough to understand everything. Its going to take a while to get to me due to whatever red tape crap Italians have to deal with when shipping weapons. So even though Im stationed in Italy it has to go to the US then back to my military address here.... absolutely crazy that i have to wait more than a month to get something that would normally take 2 days. Uhlan as always its a pleasure to read your explanations.

Ah! I know! The pictures are from Cherney! The great, famousand first class auction house of Italy. No worries then mate. Cherneys doesn't do junk either. You cannot just pick it up at the office? And later on stuff it into your duffel bag when you go home?
