You wonder why the sword community is dying, here lies your answer, or at least part of the answer. All I did was state an opinion with facts to back it up. I’m not going to play that game. Actually, the sword community is dying because your incorrect price analysis is driving smiths out of the business. It's not the first time people have come in with no knowledge and slung shite about swords being overpriced, and it hurts business with new customers for reputable smiths and discourages others from entering the field. The only fact you've backed up is people constantly want more for less and thats why the community is dying. Best not to waste your time commenting. "User1576" or whatever he was calling himself at the time has apparently "self deported" form the forum. He was probably just another youngster taking a break from D&D in moms basement.

I actually saw his sword for sale on eBay. He’s got the picture of it half unwrapped. In the description he neglected to put in the weight. I couldn’t help myself and asked him how much it weighed. He said 7 lbs but handles like five. Like I said, I couldn’t help myself. Lol

Lol LMOA...You just can't make this stuff up..here the link: www.ebay.com/itm/700-Shipped-Fully-Forged-Longsword-w-Scabbard-by-Jeremy-Eichelberger/392593771547?hash=item5b68698c1b:g:CaUAAOSwm11d98qVHere is the text.. highlighted portions for fun...note the listed buy it now price is $500 ($700 Shipped) Fully Forged Longsword w/Scabbard by Jeremy Eichelberger Condition is New, but second hand now. Price is 700$ shipped. This is a longsword made by a Oak Mountain Armory (Jeremy Eichelberger). The blade is made out of forged 1075 high carbon steel, with the guard and pommel being made out of forged mild steel. It has about a 38.5 inch blade (appox. 2.2" wide at it's base), a guard that is 10" wide approx., with the total length being about 54" overall. It does have a few blemishes on it most of which can be polished out or fixed pretty easily. The grip is covered in nickel wire wrap with even the ring in the middle of the grip being forged mild steel. The grip also has an oval shape with a max of about 1.2" in width. The pommel is more of a fishtail style pommel, and of course the tang is peened with a peen block. The blade has a thickness of 5mm with no taper to give it an extreme power in a strike. Comes with a plain white scabbard (the outside is a little dirty, but you can easily just lightly sand it and paint over it). But, everything is solid. The sword was made last summer but has never been used, not even once. It has been well taken care of and frequently cleaned. And the sword came with the flaws (I know it's weird). Comes with a sword frog. It’s worth about $1400 as it sits. No returns. I use paypal if you are interested in buying, message me if your interested.

I’m can be such an a**hole sometimes. 😆 It's the "custom sword" someone with no knowledge of swords or swordsmanship would commission. Frankly I am surprised and disappointed a professional smith would make something like that. It doesn't reflect well on him. A real ahole would offer him $25 for it to use it as a pry/crowbar.

Again, I lay a lot of the blame at the smiths feet for not refusing to make that thing and not educating the kid. The smith either has no pride in his work as a sword smith or he is a total whore. Either way, it gives custom smiths a bad name. I wonder... if he sold it cheap enough if someone with a grinder might be able to remove enough material to turn it into something a little closer to an actual sword...

Ah, missed opportunities. 😎 To be honest I am sorry to see that the kid apparently gave good $$$ to a supposed custom smith who was willing to make him that "sword like thing". Again, I lay a lot of the blame at the smiths feet for not refusing to make that thing and not educating the kid. The smith either has no pride in his work as a sword smith or he is a total whore. Either way, it gives custom smiths a bad name. Mr. Eichelbergers work is not bad; we once had a sword from him but Holger sold it because he doesnt like round pommels too much. It was a nice sword, not really heavy, even for a woman. Too big, yes. But this guy... he made a really insulting offer for our mantis katana a day before christmas or so via PM. He offered a "at least worth 800 USD antique" tsuba plus 300 USD for the sword, well knowing we need CASH for our kitty. Literally made me cry angry tears.

Just want to point out that you shouldn't be criticizing the smith here, he made what his customer wanted. That's what you want a custom smith to do. For all we know he did point out what the handling of the sword would be like.

Nonetheless...he made the sword and gets to own the fact that he made what most here agree is a pry-bar at over 7 lbs. Maybe someone should remind him that a sword smith, just like any other bespoke vendor, can and will be judged by the work he puts out into the market.

Yes he will be judged by the work he puts on to the market, and in this case we should be looking at the fact he made exactly what the customer wanted and that the customer was completely satisfied with his work. You can't bag a swordsmith because they made something you don't like. I wouldn't buy that sword either. From what dandelion said the smith has a good reputation and makes good swords, but I doubt there are many swordsmiths who are in a position to say no when someone approaches them with a fist full of cash and asks them to make something.

I believe I've experienced this.
Take a close look at this photo. The dark areas oscillate with the grind pattern, and were not something that could be rubbed off. I did not use any abrasives but I believe the "burn" theory could make sense.
The dark areas were mostly on the same side of the blade, but were in many areas. I returned the sword.
