There's a member named Aikidoka who would know a lot in this area. He's a current HEMA competition cutter with lots of experience and wins behind him.

Yeah Aikidoka is a great cutter. Saw him at SoCal earlier this year and it was like watching a jedi lol.

Probably best if OP sends a PM to Aikidoka, imo.

i've read that albion always wins. Interesting. Learned something new. Might that be from a better heat treat, angle of the edge, or just a heavier sword?

i've read that albion always wins. Interesting. Learned something new. Might that be from a better heat treat, angle of the edge, or just a heavier sword? Blade design and edge geometry would be the most significant contributors followed by grip design. Heat treat is important in ensuring the blade can flex but not take a bend and that the blade can achieve and hold a proper edge. A heavier sword is a disadvantage unless you are beating on rocks...most people who do not understand swords think bigger and heavier is better... as in many other things in life, and as elsewhere, they are wrong. They so not understand the physics of a blade moving thru a medium. Albions are typically lighter than most all other manufacturers. Albion has the advantage of having one of the foremost experts on medieval swords. Peter Johnsson, on staff designing their blades an ensuring such things as proper distal taper, blade cross section, balance and harmonics (point of percussion). Few other manufacturers pay such close attention to the details of sword mechanics. Most of the sword market is focused on aesthetics only, which is how the general public got the impression that medieval swords weigh 5 - 10 lbs...lol. As far as a competition itself, I have never been in a HEMA cutting competition but I have competed in JSA tameshigiri competitions around the US and in Japan. Swinging a sword to cut with is is not unlike swinging a bat, a fly fishing rod or a golf club...with many of the same bio-mechanics called into play. It is the technique of the practitioner that results in success or failure as long as the tools (sword/bat/golf club) are of quality construction and design. Having a superior tool gets the mediocre or incompetent person only so far...The superior tool in the hands of the skilled person...magic.!

if true, probably not because they are heavier. lots of heavy swords out there. it might be that people who practice lots n train hard because they really want to win, buy the most expensive because they think that helps.

Just had to take a long break, things changed for me at work. Also working 7 days a week for over 2 years got to me, I'm 61. I have ever really did Crusader type swords, just migration era, falicons and messers.

Albions and Atrims generally do very well in competition, from what I have read. Very different feeling swords and both excellent. I think the reason we hear about their use in competition besides the quality is that they are some of the more readily available options for high performance blades available.

I've never seen a competition in person, but I've watched clips on YouTube a number of times. Albion definitely seems to be the favorite (unsurprisingly). I've also seen a Cold Steel longsword show up a time or two.

Clearly the Albion and ATrim dominance in modern medieval sword competition highlights that like the old Japanese katana, there is far more involved in design and construction than sharpening a pieces of steal with a handle on it.
