Shipping insurance is worthless, if they lose the package they will NOT honor it. Ive had multiple packages go missing or be marked delivered but to the wrong address and their answer is always the same "its marked delivered not our problem" or "you need to call this person" and then when you call that number they tell you you need to call the person you just talked to who gave your their number then they will bounce you back and forth until you give up. Unfortunately, this has been my experience, too, with USPS, UPS, and FedEx. Likewise, my experience has been that PayPal will not honor any buyer protection policies on an item PayPal deems to be a “weapon.” Just anecdotal, so fwiw.

USPS NEVER honors insurance.

For what it's worth, it is against Paypal's Acceptable Use Policy (specifically point #2) to use their services in the trade of firearms, ammunition, firearm accessories, certain knives and other weapons (emphasis mine). Likewise, if you are trying to bend the rules to get an item restricted by law into your country (such as the UK), that is also against their policy (point #1, see below).
You can't blame a company when you violate their rules for using their service. As for USPS, I can't comment. I don't know their policies in detail. They often don't seem to, either.
Quoted from Paypal's website:
"Prohibited Activities You may not use the PayPal service for activities that:
1) violate any law, statute, ordinance or regulation.
2) relate to transactions involving (a) narcotics, steroids, certain controlled substances or other products that present a risk to consumer safety, (b) drug paraphernalia, (c) cigarettes, (d) items that encourage, promote, facilitate or instruct others to engage in illegal activity, (e) stolen goods including digital and virtual goods, (f) the promotion of hate, violence, racial or other forms of intolerance that is discriminatory or the financial exploitation of a crime, (g) items that are considered obscene, (h) items that infringe or violate any copyright, trademark, right of publicity or privacy or any other proprietary right under the laws of any jurisdiction, (i) certain sexually oriented materials or services, (j) ammunition, firearms, or certain firearm parts or accessories, or (k) certain weapons or knives regulated under applicable law."
Footnote: Hilariously, my State's Concealed Carry program lets you renew your license online and they use Paypal to process the fee. I have no idea why Paypal allows that as it seems hypocritical, but whatever.

Usps honored my insurance but I had to fight them for 6 months and in the end they didn't cover it all, was close but not quite. Which is why I choose speed vs insurance these days

Worked as a shipping/receiving manager for years... can confirm. Shipping insurance is almost useless.

Happening to me right now, USPS lost a GUN that was going to my FFL and when confronted about it they acted like it was no big deal and said nothing they could do. 0 attempt made to even find it.

Happening to me right now, too! Ordered a Celtic short sword from Celtic Webmerchants beginning of the month, said it would be here middle of the month. Delivery date is long past due. Tracking on PostNL says it was received in the Netherlands on the 9th and hasn't changed since then,.. USPS says they never even got the package so obviously it's lost. Hoping it'll turn up, though I've had stuff go missing and turn up and the item looks like it was sent through a meat grinder. Just want my money back at this point, but the seller has to go through all the motions of pretending to look for it. Probably be months before I get a refund....

But that is false. They have a proper official procedure for locating lost property. They take it very seriously. Fill out a lost property report and they begin a proper investigation about its whereabouts!

I filed a report with the Postal Investigations Office 7 months ago about a misdelivered package, received a case number, and never heard back. I fully expect to never hear anything. Everybody I talked to at USPS basically didn't care about the mixup.

This happened several years ago. USPS "lost" a fairly expensive rifle and scope that was fully insured. They refused insurance claim etc. Right off the bat. One more chance was given to them, and if nothing was done to locate said rifle, the ATF is going to be contacted and they can deal with them. The rifle and all contents "magically" appeared(I think it was 4-5 days later)

Shipping insurance combined with mandatory nondigital signature has worked okay by me. If they can’t prove they delivered it they’re liable and if the wrong person signs I have proof and can ensure they hand it back or become a felon. So far, I’ve never had any big package sent with those lost.
What Grey, a Nihonto dealer advices is that if you’re especially worried about it getting lost to upgrade to registered mail. It has to be signed at every point of the way and if you lose it it costs you your job. In reality ID+Sig and insurance should be enough.
