So it's finally happened, a company is finally making a functional reproduction of Ogami's "Dotanuki" sword. I love Lone Wolf and Cub so much. If I had the cash I'd be on one of these so fast it'd make your head spin, hahaha.

I tried starting this series once, I think, but never did keep up.
Impressions of the sword itself are, while it looks nice, yikes...$1200?

Good idea, lots of LW fans out there. Great 6-movie series. The CAS $1200 price is high; price should be better if/when other dealers sell it.

Yeah, it's definitely priced at a premium. I know LG Martial Arts can and will order it for you. Don't know if there's a difference in price or what.

“I have decided to escape, to defy the shogun. Today I will begin walking the road to hell. But you will choose your own path. So, soon you may be seeing heaven. Choose the sword, and you will join me. Choose the ball and you join your mother, in death. You don’t understand my words, but you must choose. So… come boy, choose life or death.” - Ogami Itto, Lone Wolf and Cub

Wish people would support and look at the SBG Sword Store a little more often.. Not only does it make the forum possible and keep the lights on, and no offense to LG Martial Arts, but its $769 with $15 flat rate shipping at SBG and $815 at LG Martial Arts. sbg-sword-store.sword-buyers-guide.com/product905.html

The prices for this piece is becoming quite attractive. I may pull the trigger on this eventually. Does anyone know if the kozuka actually fits into the saya?

I can definitely see a few little differences. I can't remember if it was katate-maki 100% of the time. The kashira is different than in the Tomisaburo Wakayama films(never watched the TV series. Got hooked on Tomisaburo's version and didn't want to see any others, hahaha). It would be odd if the kozuka is just a loose accessory, but all in all, I'm eagerly awaiting the day when I win the lottery and can afford to snag one of these. I'd love to get the Hanwei version of the Zatoichi sword to go with it. Tomisaburo Wakayama and Shintaro Katsu, brothers in real life, and probably my two favorite Japanese movie characters of all time. Just have to get them to make the Kuwabatake/Tsubaki Sanjuro sword from Yojimbo/Sanjuro and you have a trifecta of all time Japanese greats.

Does anyone know if the kozuka actually fits into the saya? I would be curious of that. If it doesn't then it's kind of an odd choice to include. It's also interesting that they include the Kozuka( a very small detail) but didn't wrap the ito in katate-maki like the film. KOA just listed this as a new item and has lots of good pics. Here’s the kozuka in the saya:

$705 makes it almost tempting, too...

Man, KOA prices are hard to beat. I still haven’t seen any vendor listing the new Dragon King Wave offering with folded steel. Can’t quite decide between the Ogami Itto and the the Wave.

Feimao: We should have the Dragon King Wave Katana and its matching Wakizashi available within the next few business days at KOA

If it is meant to be a one stop shop for a guide and sales, the forum may really be driving your economic model, rather than the other way around. I don't know if you can better co-ordinate discount codes for vendors that advertise here but it might be a way to better make it work both ways, if you get my drift. I think you are a bit at the mercy of other jobbers though and maybe reach out for a similar symbiotic relationship. The overall market is a bit of a Pandora's box though. Opened in the 1990s with little looking back. It is a buyers market and price checking rather de rigueur these days. Swamped might be a better descriptive with many looking for the patronage. Best GC

Oh yes, ick. Sorry.
The hi res images don't do the sword build any favors. Though, far be it from me though to disparage an enthusiast. Mine is just a traditionalist's view.

In looking at pictures of the whole line on KOA, the fit and finish seems like quality control is kind of all over the place. Fuzzy ito has never been a real draw for me. Overall, I would expect better work for a sword retailing for $1200. I am admittedly way below the curve of the current katana market but I also admit I am not in the market for what I see from the overall line.
Cheers GC

Very nice looking dotanuki katana. Huawei's own site had some really nice looking $600 dotanuki katanas, I much admired. I ended up with a Jkoo/Sinosword dotanuki katana (just arrived) that is a lot of sword for the off the shelf $219 price. Perfect sword? Sword so far, seems without anything for me to nit pick...quite nice. Saya nice but fit a bit loose...easy fix but IMO, the Jkoo q.c. person should have caught and had the "sword rattles a bit and slides out of the saya if tipped" issue. Took me about 15 minutes to put cotton balls down the saya and elmers glue a couple small rectangles of heavy typing paper inside the koguichi mouth...but why should I have to? For a $219 sword, should I not expect perfection? RinC

Good point, I often totally forget about the SBG Store, because when I come here to read/chat, it is not in my face so to speak. Suggestion...make the SBG Store "in your face" when accessing the SBG Forum. I feel like a free loader now (guilt is overwhelming....). RinC (but seriously, we tend to chat about non-SGB swords and forget SBG store sales supports this forum)
