WTF? This happened just up the road from me at the municipal center. From what we know of right now, it was an ex employee that walked in to the permit office at 4:00 and started shooting. 11 dead. And the place is always swarming with cops and sheriffs and other lawmen.
I can't figure it. This sort of thing is unheard of in VA Beach. Nothing much ever happens around here except for the occasional drunk in public or other pettiness. I also can't figure out why some people think murder is an appropriate problem solving tool. I mean, damn, we just had the mayor at our company party last Friday. And one of my employees was killed last weekend in a random shooting at a block party.
What is happening with the world? And don't tell me gun control is the solution. We've had guns for 800 years and this sort of thing never happened. There is something wrong with the humans.

Super glad to hear you're safe.
Without getting into weapon control or bans or amendments I'd just say that this kind of thing has been glamorized to those with a sick or broken mind, just like with the serial killer boom. They get a ton of press, the assailant becomes infamous, and people get killed, hurt or left to suffer for their loved ones. That's all pretty awesome to someone with a mental or psychological disorder that leads them into that way of thinking, be it rationally or irrationally. That's not including those who do it for terroristic purposes. Don't know how to fix it since we can't look into peoples heads and see what they are thinking.

The usual "fixes" were in place. Gun free zone. Metal detectors. Armed cops. I think it's looking like a massive security failure on the part of the city. But details remain to be known, so jumping to conclusions serves no useful purpose. Just this morning I was listening to the news and the major lead story was the trash left behind by festival goers and how residents were angry at the city for not having a better plan to handle it. Being as how it's a resort town and hosting festivals are our bread and butter. Now this. I guess I'll have to pack every single time I leave home without exception.

About a year ago in the city I live which is very quiet and peaceful, a man shot his pregnant wife and a cop and then shot himself. People are getting messed up these days.

Yes, I sure hope they don't give the name of this (or any) creep who randomly takes innocent life. I actually look on the bright side of human nature and realize that this evil sickness is still incredibly rare, percentage wise, as America is a nation of 1/3 of a billion people.

Sadly, if a person is hell bent on hellish acts such as this, it would be hard to stop that person from taking a dozen or so lives. Aside from enhanced situational awareness I wouldn't change my life patterns in any meaningful way. If someone is acting mentally unstable or talking about taking their life or the life of others take is seriously and report it so that person can get help before it escalates.

Ah man. Glad to hear you're safe, sorry to hear for the victims and my prayers will be with their families. I couldn't imagine being so disconnected to murder 11 people I probably saw every day.

Really bad these nut jobs do this crap. I own quite a few modern handguns, military rifles and the dreaded AR and AK ones. I just do not understand how a "normal" person would go on a shooting rampage. I grew up in Appalachia where almost everyone had rifles and pistols in their house. No murders the whole time. A couple of hunting deaths due to firearms. I just do not get it anymore. The law abiding gun owners will be punished for all the nut jobs and criminals using illegal firearms which will not have any effect on shootings and crime....

I do not own any actual fire arms but I do own high powered airguns and I am worried with all these shootings that soon we will need a license for these as well. People ruin it for all of us.

We're being bombarded about this by the news media but the mass stabbing of school kids in Japan made the news for about one day. No call for stricter knife laws or knife bans. Not that I'm saying there should be but you can see an agenda being played out here. Yes you can make laws that will restrict law abiding citizens but you can't stop the black market sales so all you're accomplishing is disarming law abiding citizens and preventing them from protecting themselves. This is a mental health issue not a weapons issue but mental health is a sticky subject that no one wants to deal with.

Gee I can't imagine why a mass shooting in USA is getting more media coverage in the USA than a mass stabbing in a country ~6,000 miles away got.

Glad to hear you're ok. This kinda thing is just a senseless waste. We're just hearing details about this on the evening news. Prayers for the impacted--hopes for a better tomorrow. Ouro

Glad to hear that you and yours are okay. This is just senseless, and frankly I am lost for words. Just goes to show that even the quiet, laid-back places can turn into a nightmare scenario in a split second because of some lunatic with a gun. Prayers out to all.

My unanswered question is: where were the literally 2 or 300 cops that are always around, being as how the next building over is Police HQ and nobody dares to speed down the road because you will get a ticket 100% guaranteed? Why didn't the city planners plan for an event like this when it's happened in other places?
It makes me angry because now the draconian response will surely happen in which the people who had nothing to do with the crime will be the ones punished for it. And that means me. I'll be punished for what this a-hole did. I was just leaving work to go camping for the weekend, I had nothing to do with it.
