Ok, you're standing in a white room with a door in front of you and a table in your back. On the table lie various swords. You don't know what's behind the door. The door starts to open. What's behind? Angry T-Rex? Inigo M.? Pack of dogs? Ninjas? Count de Money? What's the sword of your choice?

Never knew there was two kinds. But the one that had a two handed grip. Against a beast or monster, I would feel confident with something used in two hands, plus I could use long sword techniques against a human if that's what was on the other side

1860/1906 US saber as its the most versatile sword i currently own. Shield of some kind too.

If I had my choice I'd go with either a Type XVa or XVIa Longsword.

Most likely a complex hilt longsword for me. Or if a secondary is allowed, id consider a sidesword and buckler

I'm sure that no matter what sword I picked, if it were anything other than the dogs behind the door, I'm toast.

I would choose either a big boy cavalry sabre like the KS52 or American 1860, or a cutting focused sidesword. I would not choose a rapier even though I am most trained in that weapon, as against multiple opponents I would tend towards the cut, and against a pack of animals I would not like my blade to become stuck inside one of the beasts while I am then set upon by the others.
As far the most versatile weapon, what era should we decide on? In the medieval era no doubt it would be the easily wearable arming sword. Past the 16th and into the 17th century I would say the various types of military swords and sabres.

For all purpose mayhem, I would prolly go for this beauty by LWF/Wes Beem. Two handed and big enough for power slashes - super sharp and you *know* it’s tough steel - yet svelte enough for Kung fu and grappling type stuff. Plus, if it’s a grizzly bear behind the door, it will look great and just feel good in the hands as I’m torn limb from limb. 😁 This thing popped up for sale once and I missed it. Next time... 😊

My answer? A szabla or similar saber cause its the only kinda sword I really feel comfortable using.
Divorcing my own experience though, I think a sidesword would be a great pick. Its great in the thrust without sacrificing much of the cut. The hand protection is also great.

De Monet, DE MONET
I concur with nddave that a type xva would be a great choice for versatility.
I'd be (obviously) happy with a katana, or one of its European cousins (kriegsmesser or swiss sabre), but I think the type xva longsword would be a just a bit more versatile with extra reach.

Don't get saucy with me, Bernaise! In the moment I'd take my new D'Capitan. But Djin's swiss saber made me think of my Dark Sentinel. It's somehow a curved XVa. Light enough for single hand use but also with the reach of longsword if you want. Both my D'Cap and the Dark Sentinel have a curved blade with a diamond cross section and a good mass distribution. But first of all I'll need a miracle!

If I had to chop up an angry T-Rex I'd go with a light saber.
For any of the other opponents, I'd go with a falchion. I can't fence but if I get lucky and get in 1 hit. Whatever I hit will loose chunks.

I'd go with a ring-hilted bastard sword like my Windlass German bastard. Decent hand protection, long grip, good reach. Of course, the 9mm I have tucked in my pants is going through the door with me.

I like mine too. It’s not nimble but a powerhouse with good hand protection.
